Hey, so I've seen some of you guys on here saying coconut oil all over the hair before you bleach seems to lessen damage - just wondering if the same would apply to shea butter, and if there would be a difference?
I could be completely wrong but from what I can tell bleach is a very strong alkaline, whilst the oil and shea are both fatty acids? So I'm guessing it lessens the chance of chemical burns by providing both a barrier and neutralising slightly? I dunno, I could be completely barking up the wrong tree here - I was just wondering as whilst I have fairly strong hair I have VERY sensitive skin (psoriasis, exzema) and its always that which punishes me even after a bleach bath, which is all I've ever done. (Yes I know I probably shouldn't be using bleach at all, I know... but...but...need bright hair ;w;)
thanks guys, would love to hear your opinions π
The trick to coconut oil is the lauric acid, which binds to the proteins of the hair to help keep the bleach from destroying them.
Shea butter might work for helping your scalp while bleaching, but it wouldn't help minimise the damage to your hair.
Yeah, I've heard about shea butter being recommended for dry skin, I don't think it's supposed to be used on hair
I have a little pot of pure Shea butter and I use a little on my fingers to run through my hair once I've straightened it to tame frizzies but I doubt it'd do anything to protect the hair from bleach.
Hmmm, operation shea on scalp and coconut oil on hair it is then, thanks guys! Now to find a developer that's for sensitive skin *and* available in the UK XD
I don't know if Sallys in the UK sells Ion developer, but they have some for sensitive skin. It definitely seems less irritating than most other developers IMO
Coconut oil protects the scalp too. My daughter has a scalp condition and coconut oil is the only thing that makes bleaching remotely tolerable.
I have also found that better quality bleach really helped. Last time I did her roots we used Wella Blondor and 20 vol cheap developer from Sallys, over lots of coconut oil that had been on for about an hour. It only needed to be left on for 20 minutes, and she didn't experience any discomfort. Other bleaches and no coconut oil have left her in tears after just five and had to be rinsed straight off.
