Still a work-in-progress, but I thought it would be interesting to see the evolution over the years, and especially in the last six months, where I'd say I've made the most changes, and no alternative colours, just natural (hence a 'mini' timeline).
Born with naturally curly, dark reddish brown hair:
After experimenting in my early 20s with lots of highlighting over frosting over chemical straightening and frying my hair to look like straw (which I have no pictures of at the moment), I went jet black for quite a while:
I experimented with box dyes in various shades but, for the most part, always went back to dark browns/black browns as a safety net.
Now fast-forwarding to about six months ago, after loads of keratin blow-dry treatments, making it pin-straight, but allowed my hair to actually grow longer and stronger... I loved this style, but of course it was heat-styled with a curling wand:
What I wasn't fond of with the dark brown was that air-drying the new straight style left it a bit harsh-looking and stringy-greasy, even one day after washing (hate this picture):
So I started laying off the brown/blacks and went for professional half-head highlights in August 2013, and they used loads of toner:
Was digging the lighter colour framing my face, so I started more blonding box dyes and some colour removers at the length, revealing a lighter colour from a very light blonde I used a few years back (and forgot about!):
After the dip-dye last weekend, I was lucky the ends were not in a worse condition; they lightened a bit, but I was still left with loads of brassiness, and of course, the idiot stylist didn't use any toner:
And I held off from any peroxide for about five weeks, but the roots were getting so horrible, and the overall colour was looking very dingy (hate this picture too):
That I finally did the roots this past week, not a perfect job but at least much more tolerable:
Still too much dinginess, so I tried some toning treatments this weekend (the below mixed with loads of conditioner):
And I'm so chuffed with the result!
Still some ginger to tone away at the lengths, but all-in-all, I think I'm quite pleased till I allow myself to use peroxide again:
Where I'll end up, I don't quite know yet, ha ha, but I'm loving the lighter colour and prospects of experimenting with tints in the future.
ADDED 17/11/2013 (a curly picture, colour looking quite bright in this light!):
EDITING TO ADD THE PROGRESSION:
1. Bright morning light coming in from the window
2. Fluorescent-type lighting from opposite side and incandescent from above
3. Incandescent light from high ceiling
The pictures below were from 1-2 weeks ago...
NOW... after a quite diluted Pravana Silver (two 'doses'):
09/01/2014: And adding a couple more pics, I missed some spots with the Pravana Silver, it's noticeable in the plaits when the two areas are side by side... will be correcting that this weekend!
And one more update... this Pravana Silver stuff is incredible. I used it much less diluted, about 50:50, on most of the lengths, and it's deepened the blonde and made it nice and neutral and ashy! The more I use it, the more I love it. ...
After fading the overdone Pravana Silver, the colour I can live with for the moment, curled! :):
Oh wow the toning you did really really made a big impact! It looks really nice! I like the dark chocolatey brown on you too + of course i love the black π yout current color is lovely though!
Nice π
I was just looking through your timeline again + with each hair color you have it makes you look like a whole new person! Its really cool, you have had so many different looks π
Thanks so much! I think the top picked up too much of the Cramer Color, which is blue, because under the lights at work, it looks a bit, well, bluer. Getting there though. Blonde is a tricky haircolour to work with but loads of options. I rather like the idea of pastels and might try to push the violets once the level is light enough.
Cool to hear I've changed the look so much with just changes to my hair, I like that, ha ha. π
I love the jet black on you! Black is such a fun color π
That's a really pretty summery blond you have now, it looks great!
They're all very nice, but I like the chocolate brown and light blondes the best π
Thanks so much :-*
I absolutely LOVED black, and especially the blue-black, but I'm really digging the blondes now and keep on trying and trying to get the right shade. As funny as it sounds, I'm hoping to achieve the idea of the blue-black effect with blonde, somehow... dunno. Probably a very cool blonde would do it.
It's still a work-in-progress but loads of fun. π
That's sort of what I'm doing too! I loved having true and blue black and I'm going for a silvery white. I totally get what you mean. It's like going for the same tone but on opposite sides of the spectrum.
Whoa, cool Icebear! Exactly!
It's hard to describe isn't it, but I loved the look of blue-black, and as I'm doing blonde, I won't go back to black (go on, sing Amy Winehouse) now. But I want the same overall effect, and I think you're right, a silvery white would probably do it.
Glad you understand - I'd love to compare notes along the way, so please keep me updated on your progress! *cheers*
Absolutely! You too π We'll be silver buddies π
I love what the Pravana Silver has done, it looks so different now! The coolness of it actually makes it look lighter π It looks so pretty + the cool blonde suits you really well, I love it! I can't wait to see your further progression! Looks like the pravana silver is definitely a keeper!
So Excited to see the final result π
Icebear definitely, silver buddies... and thanks Katie and Zaralily! I think I'm still going to add to it, and when I feel like doing a tidy job (ha ha), I may try to apply it neat in a reverse balayage, like you mentioned, Katie:
... I think by doing the underlayers like you said, you'll get closer to the photo you posted here:

I would still love that look, but I don't think I'd need to dilute it at all to achieve that! It's fun continuing to try it out in different ways, I'm going to need to buy more. π
Updated 08/07/2014:
Edit to add the "before" picture:
Here's how it happened. And the more I look at it, the more I'm absolutely loving it. Colleagues certainly noticed: one said she thought I got my hair professionally done, and another said this is the best blonde she's seen yet.
Looks different in different lights, and mobile camera flashes, of course, but the top row of pics is probably the most true to life.
Used this stuff (Nirvel ArtX Nutre Color Grey): <picture of hair dye removed>
Mixed with just a tiny bit of this stuff (Crazy Color Natural Blond) on bits that needed some neutralising: <picture of hair dye removed>
Here's how it happened. And the more I look at it, the more I'm absolutely loving it. Colleagues certainly noticed: one said she thought I got my hair professionally done, and another said this is the best blonde she's seen yet.
Ended up squeezing loads of the Nirvel into the conditioner without realising how much, so hey ho. If the pictures don't show it, it's quite a lot darker than it was, even darker in contrast to my skin now, still on the 'blonde' end of the scale, but very deep and ultra ashy, yay... ;D
In an attempt to avoid bleaching and blend roots, I went for an ombre effect this weekend after using a colour remover on the toners I've been using.
I wanted more contrast, but it's best I started out subtle because, well, I chose to use box dyes(!) and don't quite remember how dark they take. This weekend was a good practice, and I'm quite chuffed with the results. I used a non-permanent box dye in dark blonde, and for the root area, I added a bit of light ash brown, and blended it about halfway down. Then I used my Nirvel ArtX grey to tone and some Touch of Silver shampoo.
For now, I love the effect because it's cleaned up the top and roots quite a lot, a rather good blend for a first try - almost like the colours of a Siamese cat. π
...
...
... the root line is nearly hidden completely.
This weekend, used more demis, with a touch of medium ash brown this time, only top and sides. Rinsed it off, then used a colour remover on the ends to bring back some brightness.
I like how there's now a contrast when I compare the side fringe to the back and top.
...
I use the Nirvel ArtX grey all the time. I love the ashy effect, and yes, you can dilute it or use it more saturated depending upon the effect you want to achieve.
I was a very golden blonde, toning with Pravana Silver and other silvering products, then I tried a good saturation of the Nirvel grey, and I loved the effect.
Recently, I've been using it nearly undiluted to achieve a more gradated ombrΓ©, and though I first used a light brown permanent colour at the roots a couple weeks ago, this past weekend I covered it and blended it more with the Nirvel, just on the underlayers and top... this is how it looked after this weekend's colouring:
(I also did a colour remover at the ends, that's why it looks more golden toward the bottom. It's still a work in progress. :))
