Thanks everyone!  I went with leopard print on the sides in the end, the colours I used were:
For the base colour - SFX Fishbowl mixed with a small amount of SFX Blue Mayhem
For the spots - SFX Wildflower mixed with a small amount of SFX Deep Purple
For the outlines - Wella Colour Touch 2/0 (a salon permanent dye with a peroxide developer - I only used a very low vol, I think it was 13vol (4%), I used a salon permanent for this because I didn't want black colour bleed going into the fishbowl sections)
I also re-dyed the ends of my dreads, getting rid of the red ones, and dyeing all of them in varying shades of blue and purple.  For the blue I used a mix of SFX Blue Mayhem with a small amount of SFX Fishbowl, and for the purples I used SFX Deep Purple with a small amount of SFX Wildflower.
