Why would a semi-permanent black dye act permanent?

A bit over a month ago I used a semi-permanent black box dye. I've washed my hair every day since and it has not budged at all! I did a vit c treatment which left me with a dark brown but subsequent vit c treatments have not removed anything further. Sooo two questions:

1. Why would a semi-permanent (washes out in 28 washes according to the box) dye stick so well? Does it have to do with my hair's state/health? I've dyed it several times over the past couple years. Most semis will act this way for me. For example special effects is basically permanent on me. But my hair does feel pretty healthy -- I haven't used bleach in a long time and my hair feels silky but that may be the Dove conditioner with 4 separate silicones tricking me!

2. What could I do in the future, once I get my hair back to lighter shade and want to dye again, to ensure a semi perm will actually wash out over time?

Box dyes that claim to be semis are actually demi-permanent. They work in exactly the same way as permanent dyes but have no ammonia and use lower volume peroxide, so give less lift. Any dye that uses peroxide permanently affects the structure of the hair.
A true semi has no peroxide and doesn't affect the hairs structure.
The good news is box semis/demi permanents usually respond very well to colour removers, so that should be your first step.
If you want a dye that washes out avoid anything with peroxide in the future. When selecting direct dyes/true semis certain brands are more likely to stain/last a really long time, Special Effects is known for its longevity.

Thanks for the reply... that makes sense, wow... they should not put "washes out in 28 days" on the boxes then! Seems like false advertising for those like me who are not very knowledgeable about hair dye!

I totally agree, I think the labelling on box dyes is very misleading.
