Dear all,
I need your expert advice!
I have an increasing amount of grey hair (sigh…) and I want to make it look like highlights, not grey but ash blonde.
My hair is brassy dark blonde.
I tried henna years ago but it turned shiny orange! Ive been using demi-permanent light blonde or extra light blonde but it doesn’t always cover the grey and changes my natural colour.
I would prefer non permanent, but im open to suggestions! Should I try shampoos or tints or… HELP!!
Thank you!!!
Carita
Grey hairs are actually hairs that refuse to take pigment (colour) any more. This can mean they won't take dyes well either but not to worry, help is at hand!
Get a highlight cap and use a very mild bleach - 20vol should be fine - and pull through some thick sections of your hair. Use the bleach but only for about half the recomended time. This way you won't fry your hair and you'll be teasing open the hair cuticles to let the colour in. You're not highlighting in the traditional sense, just helping the hair to take some colour. I know this will probably grab a few hairs with natural colour in too but bear with me.
When the bleach has been on a while rinse it off thoroughly! Then use a nice SEMI permanent blonde while you still have the cap on. This way you won't be dyeing your whole head of hair.
Permanents use PPD's which are harmful but also make your hair turn matt after a few washes which on blonde hair will make it look dry and bleach fried, which is not what you want. So use a nice semi on the highlight strands, follow the instructions and when you have finished take off the highlight cap.
Wash your hair through and dry it. What you'll have is your natural colour with blonde highlights. It'll be multi tonal and the bleach will have hardly touched it so it won't be too much paler than it was before but it will have taken the blonde dye much better.
Without bleach - you only need a little on grey hair - your greys won't take dye very well. Permanents do stick to grey hairs because of the PPD's but in light of recent news items it's best to stay away from those and use this method instead.
Thank you, Mathurine!!!
Sounds good! I could try! Can you reach the (stupid!! >:() short hair in the temples when you use a highlight cap? I guess you need practice...
Anyhow, what if i miss some grey hair? Would it look like patches or something?
Something else, what about tints like J F Lazartigue Colour Emulsion or Danielfield, do they need mild bleach too?
Thank your for your help!!!
Carita
As long as the cap is pulled down tight over the temples you should be able to pull some through. The main thing is to get as much through as you can to create a highlighted blonde effect. You will have some greys left but there should be more in the way of blonde so the greys won't look so bad.
I'm, not familiar with J F Lazartigue Colour Emulsion or Danielfield so I'm afraid I can't help there.
