For Comicon next month (23 May), I'm dressing as a young female version of this guy (Dr. Zed from the game Borderlands):
I want to copy his salt and peppery look, with the dark black/grey base and silver/white temples and silver/white thin strands running through out the hair, but adapt it slightly to make it look more like 'fashion' dyed hair.
By dark grey/gunmetal grey this is sort of what I mean:
For the lighter silver/white any shade will do
Whatever I do to my hair, I need the colour to be natural (or almost natural at least) again for school the week after (1st June).
My current hair colour is bleached light blonde (no darker than level 8.), but I'll probably be doing a few bleach baths over the weeks to get it as close to all over pale yellow as possible.
I'm having a hard time finding temporary options for this particular look, but I'm considering using one or multiple of the following things:
For the black/grey base colour:
Temporary Dye? - however, they rarely seem to come in shades of grey. I have found Roux Fanci-Full which seems like a good option, but the silver shades are too light, and the black is too dark. Do you think I could mix the two colours?
Coloured Hair Spray? - preferably I'd rather not use this because it just won't look as good. Also I doubt I'll be able to find the right colour and mixing hairspray seems almost impossible.
For the silver/white strands:
Temporary dye?
Hair chalk?
Hair spray?
Hair strand extensions?
Hair tinsel?
I already have pravana silver at home, so I could use that if my base ends up light enough by then, and if I can wash most of it out in time.
If all else fails I'll probably spray most my hair black and my temples white and try use the texture to my advantage OR, just use an all over light silver dye and hope it works over my base colour.
To be honest if it doesn't look exactly how I want I don't mind, especially since I'm already confined to temporary options. Of course I want it to look as good as possible, but I'm not super fussed as it's nothing serious, just a bit of fun for a day π
Sorry that was so long!
What do you think of the options/methods I've thought of? Do you have any other suggestions?
I'd really appreciate any advice - Thanks π
I have used the roux True Steel and it is quite dark but maybe not quite as dark as you want but probably still worth a shot. The rinse is super watery and hard to apply but they also sell a mousse so that might be easier. I bet you could mix the rinses but I've never tried. Also the Pravana would definitely be dark enough but I don't know if it would wash out in time. You could dilute the Pravana way down for for the light silver-y colors and I imagine that would wash out fairly fast. Other than that, maybe chalk and hairspray would be your best bet.
Also, if you're not opposed to dyeing with peroxide, than Wella has something called a drabber. It is supposed to be added to other dyes to tone down brassiness but I have seen tutorials online and on youtube of people using it by itself as a dark gray dye. It is Wella Color Charm 050. I've heard it washes out fairly fast.
If you're looking for a temporary colour for a day only, and it needs to go back to your usual bleached blonde, my suggestion would be to get a wig. Even with true semi dyes, a lot of people can find that bleached hair is very porous, and will pick up staining from semis, even if they're heavily diluted, meaning that it may never go back to the bleached blonde you have now. Most semis also stick for a lot longer on bleached hair, meaning that it may take you weeks or months to get all of the semi dye out, so it's not really a temporary solution. Also, it seems like a lot of trouble to go to just for one day, when buying a wig would be so much easier, and definitely temporary!
Thanks for all your suggestions! Sorry for the late reply.
I actually found a bunch of hair chalks for sale which have shades of white, light silver, dark grey, and black so I was thinking of buying a set since the price altogether with postage will be under Β£10. I've used hair chalk before and hair spray and both didn't seem to stain my hair. On the website it said it can stay on bleached hair for 2-3 washes so I'm not so worried. Tbh I'm dying my hair silver during the summer so I don't think slight staining will be that much of a problem.
@smurph88 I've actually changed my mind about the roux colours. I don't really have much time to bleach bath my hair right now, so I doubt my hair will be light enough for the colours to show up properly. That's the same for Pravana and the colour charm. But thank you anyway!
@Mindi Kellaway thank you for the advice. The only reason I'd rather not get a wig is just because the haircut I have now would go really well with my outfit. Also I'd find it too hard to cut the wig to match my hair.
