Suggestions on purples with this base please.

So that hideous mistake of a semi box brown has now faded to the pic below after a few washes. I haven't used a clarifying shampoo because I can't afford to dry it out at the minute. I just wondered what brand and shade of purple you would recommend to show on this base and I would prefer something that isn't pink based as it doesn't suit me at all. I have a tub of directions violet at home but I'm guessing my base isn't light enough. Also you will see that I have some root glow and the colour is a little darker and more reddish around the front of my head. Bleaching of any kind isn't an option so I'm wondering if I need to just use adore brown or if I can go purple. Thanks in advance!

How dark do you want to go? Medium to dark purples will definitely cover that . Not sure about anything light though

I'm not really sure I guess fairly dark but I would like it to be obviously purple and not appear black? I would rather have a purple that it obviously purple in all lights if that makes sense? Rather than just a sheen of purple in the light. Would my directions violet show on this colour or would it go "muddy" x

Very blue toned purples can look muddy on less than perfect bases, which is why pink based purples are a better choice, they tend to have a prettier fade too.
Strand test the Directions Violet if you already have it, you may need to add a little pink. good alternatives would be Adore Purple Rage or Pravana Violet (which is more of a balanced purple) Special Effects Deep purple will cover almost any base, but it does fade pink (although it lasts for months, so you wouldn't have to worry about it being too pink for a long time)

Thank you, so would you say I need to forget about getting a very blue looking purple which is what I had in mind?
I save some photos last night of various purples and some that have pink base (I would guess so) I'm going to number them and I would really appreciate it if anyone could tell me which colours I have to forget about and which ones are doable on this base, thanks.

(I've deleted the multiple posts, don't worry, it happens sometimes!)

In the purples. 4 and 5 would be doable. 4, because it's redder and 5 because it's heading to the browns anyway.

3, 7 and 8, no way. Especially 3, too light and too violet grey. You'd get mud before that on your base.

1 and 2 in the reds would be doable, super easy infact. I can't suggest colours right now, but look at adore and special effects reds 🙂

On the reds though, 3,4 and 5 though, the pinker 3 would work, but I thought that was just the colour you didn't want? 4 would work, but 5 is definitely pink to my eye? My phone colours can be off though.

Thanks that's a great reply. Basically my absolute favourites are a no no in the purples. How about 1 and 2 of the purples are they at all an option?

And do you know I kind of thought the exact same thing even as I posted them regarding the Reds, I contradicted myself, I think it's because I like the colour but I do think that it doesn't suit me unfortunately.

The other thing I'm considering is a midnight blue. At least I know to stop dreaming about those muted dark lavender shades now! X

Anything on the bluer side is going to be a lot harder, or impossible. You might get a dark, dark blue, but it's going to be a blue black that looks blue in the light. Anything lighter, on your roots at least, just will not go a nice colour. They won't pull to the grey side, that midnight tends to be, until the redder tones are out it's going to pull to the brown, mud side. That just doesn't work in blue. It might work on the palest parts at the bottom. But yeah, lavender shades really, really aren't going to work on what you have!

1 and 2. Hmm... 2, probably too blue again. To my eye, 1 is getting closer to that true cadbury purple, equal pink and blue. That should work. I don't really suit blue purples, they really wash me out, so I haven't experimented with them for a long time.

When you had lilac, your base wasn't quite light enough and you had sludgey areas. The same would have happened with a darker blue toned purple, it will go sludgey as it fades, and your base is darker and has orange in it now. For blues and blue toned purple you need a light blonde (platinum) base if you want it to remain vivid as it fades.
Pinky purples have a more forgiving fade.

Hmmm what to do. I really want to do something different with it whilst I have the lighter base to be able to as I don't intend on using bleach again I'm bloody petrified of the stuff now and my natural colour is really quite dark so once those roots are a few inches out that ship will have sailed once and for all so to speak.

So a Cadbury purple may work, but even in the dark blue stakes, anything other than blue black isn't going to work. Hubby thinks it's a perfectly nice "normal" colour now and that I should leave it be but honestly what does he know! haha x

What if I was to keep on top of the fade? Could I then make it work wicked pixie? Maybe I would be best going for a red. I just don't want anything that makes me look like a clone down at home bargains if you follow me. Red became so so popular last year of the year before, I'm really funny about which reds I do and don't like. Might just have to go for a dark purple instead?

I had a dark blue over a (slightly) golden blonde base, and it needed topping up after every single wash. So yes, you could in theory keep the colour topped up but it will be a lot of work. If you use either of the colours I suggested in my first reply you should have a nice purple for the longest possible time, but it will always want to fade to brown toned berry shades on that base.

It would probably be sensible to pick something that didn't need so much upkeep, especially since if I keep using these treatments they probably won't be all that kind to my colour. Going to go with one of those you recommended. Are they all similar purples?

If you go to Beeunique at the top of the page you can see examples of all of them. Deep Purple is the least blue and most likely to cover, that would be my choice. It is likely to fade to a similar shade to the second #3 with the girl in the houndstooth leggings, but it is super long lasting so would be easy to keep on top of.
