Been using Special Effects Pimpin' Purple for a few times now, it looks great but the fade is so quick π
Last time I even tried mixing it with some SE blue velvet, to try and combat the pink fade, literally bought me an extra couple of washes! I try to wash as little as i can, but i cycle and play roller derby which equals sweaty helmet hair that not even the best dry shampoo can deal with!
The pink stays stuck in a sort of fuchsia shade which really doesn't suit me, i bleached it once and it became a much cooler/electric pink which really suited me but i think overall i'm just not a pink person!
this is how it currently looks
(sorry the lighting is poor)
I'm torn between trying Manic Panic Ultra Violet or Adore African Violet, just because they are two brands I've never tried before (i know they are quite different from each other) I'm tempted to try MP first as it's brighter/more dazzling!
Sfx is usually the best lasting dye foe most people, how long do you leave it on for when you dye your hair? Also have you tried co washing? This can really help with fading problems as it doesn't strip colour as much at all.
Apart from that I don't really know what dye would be better, I have rarely used purple dyes.
How about SFX Deep Purple? I have a sneaky feeling it may be the same pigments as Pimpin purple but in a stronger formula. It starts out very dark (almost black) if used neat, but eventually fades to the same magenta then pink that Pimpin does.

i'm trying to avoid the magenta fade... if it faded a more blue-y colour/cooler pink I'd be fine, it's just that magenta really isn't my bag

Hmm, if you're looking for a more blue fade the New formula plum fades blue/turquoise. But a lot of people have had trouble shifting the blue when they want to change colour.
Pravana violet doesn't fade pink and lasts really well. I think Adores African Violet is more of an indigo blue colour, Purple Rage is more of a true purple, and I don't think it fades pink. You could always mix them.
Directions plum no longer fades pink, it fades to a blue/turquoise which really sticks around. For most people this is off putting, but it might be the perfect solution over your current pink base.
Sorry to barge in, nothing to add, except ... "what an adorable kitty" :-*
Great photo!
Hi there
Manic Panic Ultraviolet has a strong blue undertone - hence the ends of my hair being blue instead of purple. It should give less of a pink fade than you are finding with your current dye.
I'm having the same trouble as you, purple just won't stay on my hair and the ones that last longest fade pink (I'm not a big fan of pink) or a weird, gross turquoise.
Pravana Violet does fade a 'true purple', it starts out a vivid dark-ish blue-based purple and fades to lighter blue-based lilac. I don't find that it lasts any better in my hair at all, about 2 weeks before turning to light purple, even after bleach baths/bleaching my already light blonde hair and no matter how long I leave it on before rinsing. I have to wash my hair daily, but even switching to SLS free shampoo or cowashing hasn't stopped the fade for me. I'm starting to think that I'm just going to have to redye every 2 weeks.
I've currently got Adore Violet Gem in my hair, it's also fading within 2 weeks, I'm tempted to try Purple Rage, but I've heard the fade can be a bit weird and patchy. Strangely Live XXL Purple Punk lasts the longest for me, odd given that everyone else complains about how fast it fades, lol. I usually get at least 3 weeks before feeling the urge to re-dye. It is however more of a magenta/pink-based purple.
Crazy Color Hot Purple was the worst, faded in under a week to a strange purple/navy/turquoise mess. Stargazer Plume was a great colour, but within a week faded turquoise at the ends. Directions Violet lasted about 3 days.
I suspect the problem may be that even after bleach baths/mild-bleaching my hair is still in brilliant, healthy condition, not a split end in sight. Sometimes I condier bleaching the absolute hell out of it and ruining it, just so the colour will last longer, lol!
Sorry for the long reply, but I'm in the same predicament and know how it feels.
@searingidolatry, I think your issue is purely washing every day. If you are getting 14 washes before you need to re-dye, I would say your dye is lasting rather well. On someone who only washes weekly, that would be over 3 months.
If you can stretch your washes, you will extend the life of your dye.
I'd also suggest Directions Plum, especially if you don't want a pink fade as it fades to blue and then green. As other said the green is hard to shift but the dye itself lasts for ages. On my hair, it took a full month before fading and I generally wash my hair only once or twice a week (I do sports as well and sometimes you just can't avoid to wash it)
went a bit AWOL and got fed up of my hair, couldn't get Pravana without paying loads in shipping from Poland so decided to use up what was left of an old bottle of SE Blue Velvet! It looks very blue in the pic, but there are slightly more purple hints in places (really harsh lighting in my office!)

Great photo!
thanks, that's my little derpy Peanut!
Ooh this looks lovely, and it should fade purple over your pink base.
it's starting to fade purple (a much bluer-cooler purple) π
this was last week
and this is today (weird office lighting makes it look dreadful tho!)
I really like this colour on you π
