Sleeping in direct dyes typically makes them last longer.
However, Atomic Pink is practically permanent, so leaving it in longer won't make a difference.
If Atomic Pink isn't sticking in your hair it is because your cuticle is too damaged to hold colour. Try a protein treatment such as Aphogee two step before re-colouring

I used to, but then I was told that it could be the reason I was getting frequent ear infections so I stopped!

It definitely could be! I get a lot of ear infections and I avoid getting my hair wet at all if I feel my ear is even a little sore. But when I do sleep in dye or oil etc I make sure I wear a tightish shower cap and tuck it behind my ears.

Eek, yeah I have to be careful these days, it's 'swimmers ear' I keep getting (which everyone laughs at coz I can't swim and am famously terrified in the water!) which I believe comes from the skin in your ear getting  chapped and then cracking! It really hurts, you have my sympathy if you're prone to it too!
