Silver Hair - Is it worth it?

I'll try make this brief.

My sixth form won't allow unnatural hair colours, but the rules are really vague. Some people have gotten away with super bright red hair while someone with platinum hair and half a head of regrowth was asked to even it out (even though they didn't, and no one noticed!). This means I have limited options in what colours to choose.

For ages I've wanted a red/orange ombrΓ©, but recently I want silver hair. Since red is a pain to get rid of, (even though I'd rather go red first) I thought I'd better do silver hair first. It also means when I leave my sixth form (this Summer :D) I can easily have pastel hair, or some other bright colour. Also in May it's Comicon, and I'm gonna cosplay as female version of Dr. Zed from Borderlands (who has black/grey hair) so I thought silver is close enough.

My concerns are:
1.) Right now my hair is light blonde, and pretty even in colour. It looks light enough for most colours to cover, apart from maybe pastel.  I don't want to unnecessarily lighten it, unless it's really worth it.
2.) I actually like how, while my hair is pretty even, I have a few highlights, and slightly darker bits 'inside' my hair. I prefer it when dyed colours still have highlights/lowlights rather than one solid even colour. When I'm bored of silver hair, I'm worried the next colour would look too light with no variation in shade over a very pale blonde base.
3.) My hair is currently in pretty good condition. It's soft, smooth, and I have no noticeable split ends. While I know I have to bleach my hair more, I don't mind if it gets slightly worse, but I'm worried that having the lightest blonde hair will just make it really rough and nasty (even after protein/moisture hair masks etc).
4.) Silver is one of the hardest hair colours to achieve. I know if you don't have a really even base it just won't work. Also, while some people have amazing vibrant shiny silver hair, a lot of people end up with a more dusty/dull silver look.

Since it's so hard to achieve, you have to have the palest blonde even hair, and it often turns out more dull looking that is expected - is it really worth it?

(Oh, & I know it's a lot of upkeep to maintain silver, but I don't actually mind that much)

I'd really appreciate any thoughts,
Thanks!

For me, having white/silver hair is a constant battle. And I mean it, it's hard work!! By the time you get your base light enough, it's time to tackle the regrowth, which you then have to get light enough and even... endless.

If you're really clever with bleach, then I'm sure it's not as difficult. I'm hopeless and can never get a decent bleach job (I do it all myself) so I am constantly battling with it! And it's never 'perfect'. Always a bit I need to spot bleach, some gorgeous bright yellow at the back, where I can't see...

To the point I'm seriously considering giving up and going back to normal blonde or a slightly darker fashion shade.

But to answer your question, is it worth it?

For the odd week when I've just got my regrowth to be light enough & even enough with my lengths...

Yes.

For me, at least. The rest of the time I'm whining about what a pain in the butt it is! Sorry, not much help, but an honest opinion πŸ˜› good luck whatever you decide.

@Embo thank you for your honest opinion πŸ™‚
I didn't even consider the regrowth. I usually do my regrowth every couple of months when it's grown out about in inch, but I forgot it might not lighten enough to even palest blonde in 1 bleach. Also, I can't really bleach my own hair that well, which means I'd need help to spot bleach bath.
How is the condition of your hair? Even though I religiously moisturise and use oils to keep my hair nice, I'm worried my hair will just start feeling dry if I bleach it that light.

I am utterly hopeless with bleach, I never manage to get even coverage and almost always wash off too soon... otherwise, I find patches I've missed and spots which dried out so didn't lift (mainly around my hairline!). Some people manage to do brilliant home-bleach jobs, but not me! Haha!!

My hair isn't in the best condition, but it's not terrible. There are parts which are broken, but this is mainly where it suffers the most abuse - front and sides - this is where I use the most heat, so makes sense. The lengths aren't too bad. Got some broken bits underneath, at the nape of my neck.

Overall it's not too bad. I try to keep it hydrated (CO-wash & use coconut oil before bleach & when damp after washing & as a serum), use as little heat as possible and trim regularly so doesn't feel dry. And I only use 20vol peroxide when I bleach.

That's actually what I'm worried about. I've never had any breakage so far. While I hardly use any heat, I wash my hair once a week and blow dry to finish off after it's mostly air dried. My fringe and front parts of my face are probably the most dry. Sometimes when I go out I like to use more products and style my hair for more volume but I'm guessing I'll have to reduce the amount of products and heat if I have silver hair to prevent the amount of breakage.

As much as I'd love to have silver hair I'd have to keep getting my friend to help my dye the backs as inside of my hair. Plus I'd have to be a lot more gentle with my hair than I already am. I'll still consider dying my hair silver (also cause I now have a tube of pravana silver) but I'm also thinking of going back to red hair.

If you want very light hair you do have to make some sacrifices. You can choose to stay short, or give up heat styling if you want it long.
Mine is long and bleached, it isn't in what I would describe as 'good' condition, but it is OK, still soft and silky and no breakage. My avatar pic shows what it looks like after clarifying and leaving to air dry to check condition. (No conditioner or oils)
I don't use any heat styling at all, (the one exception being when I have dye or a deep conditioner on my head)or regular products like shampoo. It would be in better condition if it wasn't bleached, but it is in a state I can live with (adding coconut/argan oil takes away any dryness or frizz) so it seems a fair compromise to me.
I don't have super strong resilient hair either, my hair is actually very fine, i just have a lot of it. It is naturally dark brown, and the ends were previously dyed black. I lightened very gradually, and would have stopped if the condition was too compromised. It took about a year to go from dyed black to light blonde, I stayed at light brown and then dark blonde/yellow (with various bright colours over) for a few months along the way.
If you can get a pale and even base you then have the option of absolutely any colour you want.

@WickedPixie  (Your name has a space so I don't know if this tag will even work) your hair looks amazing! My hair is quite short so I guess that's an advantage. I have an asymmetric haircut one side bob length the other reaching just below my collar bones. I already use very little heat styling, but I could probably make an effort to reduce it more. I've also started co washing from time to time.
I'm sure at some point I'll definitely go pale blonde to try all the pastel colours, but I'm starting to think it's not so practical for me at the moment. I'm having to re-tone my blonde hair every 7-12  days. I've tried just slapping purple conditioner on my hair, but it works a lot better, where I do it section by section. I'm in my last school year so I've got my a-levels coming up. I know getting pale blonde hair in decent good condition will take a lot of time and effort. I'm already failing because I spend all my time doing my hair lol xD!
I'm considering just going back to red/orange hair for now. I've had past experiences with red staining (but I did use it on virgin hair and hair dry it in!). I'm thinking maybe going pastel during the summer instead, but  I'm wondering if red will just be a pain to get rid of and make silver hair or cool toned hair really hard to achieve. Unless it's still okay if I slowly transition

Tagging doesn't work on the forum as far as I'm aware πŸ™‚ (don't have anything else to add right now!)
