Haven't been around here too much lately, but I've got a question again. I've had some really good success in toning out gingery-blonde with Schwarzkopf Electric Blue, which seems to make a medium to dark blonde look a bit on the silvery-cool side. Also been blending roots as they grown in with light brown demis and permanents in lieu of bleaching them too often.
Did another colour-removal/recolouring/toning job today to clean everything up, but I think I was a bit too generous with the Electric Blue as a toner! It's not terribly noticeable, but there are areas, especially the sides where my fringe is growing out, that really took too much of the dye and are looking rather blue, and blue was not my intention, especially as it's not taken evenly all over!
I know of all the fading methods here, but are there any other recommendations for fading out dye just a bit? I really don't want to remove all the colour, especially again. I just want to pull out a little so it doesn't look too blue and matches more with the back lengths.
As I've used the Electric Blue before, I have experienced, at least on my hair, that particular dye really doesn't fade too much over time on its own, with washings, so I think I need to do something... especially before I start [yet another] new job on Monday. π
Thanks!
When I over tone I just use a dandruff shampoo a couple of times and that seems harsh enough to take out the excess toner but not so harsh that all the colour is stripped from the hair.
Edit: also ooh what new job are you starting?
Thanks, Marthakins! :-* I picked up some dandruff shampoo today so I'll give that a go, perhaps add some oils and a tiny bit of bleach powder, as that method seemed to work well in the past. But I won't leave it on too long if I do add any bleach powder because the effect of the Electric Blue is really good!
Thanks π ... the new job is still in finance but the location could not be better. I can now literally walk to work, 0.5-mile away, so that means a very welcomed relief from London train journeys, no travel fares, and a extra bit of a lie-in in the mornings now. ;D
good luck with the fading! And congrats on the new job!
Thanks, Glitterpix! :-*
The fading worked perfectly, but I had to get my hair wet three times yesterday, more than I normally do in a week's time. :-[
I'm changing the essence of this thread and really want to recommend this particular semi to the list of silvering, neutralising dyes that so many of us "hair-dyers" are looking for:
So if it hasn't been recommended yet, Schwarzkopf Electric Blue, when diluted and used as a toner, covers yellows and gingers surprisingly well. You'd think the reason it would work is to create an ashy tone (as yellow + blue = green/ash), and that may have something to do with it. But the Electric Blue seems to add a hint of cool-toned, silvery shimmer instead of making it too ashy-looking.
It doesn't seem to mix immediately with conditioner to make a toner, and you've got to smooth out the lumps a bit, but it might have been because I was using a cheap, cone-free conditioner.
If it's not diluted enough (as I've obviously experienced!), it just appears as if you're in a dark room with a blue light shining on your hair, which is actually quite a pretty colour too! Using 'just enough' doesn't seem to fade too easily with gentle shampooing so it lasts, but it will fade if you need it to.
I've had bad luck with blues in the past, as the ones I used always seemed to look like blue colour molecules sitting on top of brassier-coloured hair, and in some areas, it created a green effect (and those blues were amazingly difficult to get rid of as well). The Electric Blue doesn't do that and instead blends into the hair, brightens and brings out cool shimmers of silver.
So though the Pravana Silver has been one of the most recommended, it's still good but as it's more purple (blue + red), you add a little bit of red to yellow hair, so it wasn't as silvering as others I've tried. Nirvel ArtX Grey is excellent, a very neutral purple, so less red. But now I give top marks to Schwarzkopf Electric Blue to neutralise and create a silvery, cool tone over yellowy-ginger hair.
Plus, it's so much easier to get a hold of than some others, and cheaper too. ;D
