Hi! π
I'm planning to dye my hair blue at the end of the month, after wanting to do so for a year or two. I've been looking online and around various stores and hairdressers IRL to try to find techniques and products to do so.
I'm planning to go by the recommendations on wikiHow's How to Dye Hair Blue article to do it myself, but I'm uncertain about a couple of points.
For bleaching somewhat dry light-brown hair should I bleach in short sessions multiple times over multiple weeks (once per week) to achieve a sky-blue hue that doesn't fade into green without damaging my hair?
Does rinsing with white vinegar really help seal in the colour or is this claim theoretical?
I've also had difficulty with finding hairdyes and bleaches in shops.
The blonde hair dyes I've seen (for example Schwarzkopf's XXL Ice Blonde that I've seen recommended) say on their packets that they help seal in the colour. Does this make them unsuitable for preparing to dye hair in other colours?
Also, are there any stores in the UK that tend to stock blue hair dye, or is it best to order online?
Thanks for the help and sorry for the bleach question mixed in. π
ok, first off what colour isyour hair now? is it still black like i read in your last post? if you have any dye in your hair at all i would suggust using colour b4

then to get a nice even blue, you'll need to bleach until you have a nice white base. bleach bathing will be your best option, as it's less harsh to your hair and you can take your time doing it(say 1 a week, as opposed to one bleach a month)

i think all light blue's have a green base, and as blue doesnt last long and washes out alot (specially now it's sunny, so this will also fade your colour) you'll need regular top ups. using a SLS free shampoo will help

as will washing in cold water and not washing as much. also try putting some dye in your conditioner.
you're best off ordering offline, some places stock directions and stargazer, but it can be a mission trying to find somewhere

sally's do good bleach, or just using blonde dye mixed in with shampoo works just as well(i think)
i hope i was some help there =D it's no worries about asking more than one question in one post. welcome to the smurf army!
ps totally use a white vinegar rinse

im usually a permasmurf until the 4th wash, but i've had barely any rub off after using the vinegar =)
Thanks for the information! I'll read through it now.
My natural and current hair colour is light brown. I quickly took two pictures to show it but one makes me look like some kind of frog monster so I hope a backlit one isn't too bad!*forum blocks picture link after eating the post twice already* Okay I have to post a little more before I can post my hair. @_@
I like the prospect of bleaching to white first. I was hoping to include some white but thought it might be too difficult or expensive!
I'm dirt-poor at the moment, unfortunately, which is why I decided to dye it myself. I hope bleachbaths to white and my hair length won't stretch the material costs too high. @_@
P.S. Didn't the smurfs have black hair?? π
bleach bath would work out cheaper i think cos instead of using say a whole box in one bleach, you could get 2/3 out of it. my hair was this colour when i chucked the blue on. but i use neon blue mixed with atlantic, so have a purple base.
i can't remeber what colour the smurfs hair was. i know smurfette had blonde and papa had white. weren't the rest bald under there hats? =s
p.s i see no frog face =p
Ribbit!
Though looking at it now I might be experiencing that thingy with looking at pictures of oneself where faults are exaggerated. Fascinating!
The white and pink looks nice. It reminds me of a lass I saw working in a shop who had white hair with vague hints of lavender and green. The subtlety of it was beautiful.
The smurfs had black eyebrows!
2/3 as in two-thirds or two-or-three? I'll have to keep base colours in mind. I like all shades of blue, but I'm hoping to go for something lighter for an association with classical-elements-as-personality-components.
i defo's think you're seeing things that aren't there my turtle dove. my hair went that colour after doing 2x 40vol bleaches to try and remove pink. i wish i rocked it a bit longer now, i didn't realise it looked so pretty at the time =(
sozza i ment 2 or 3. by box i mean sally's bleach where the peroxide and powder are seperate as well.
Ahh I see. π I'm sure I'll find myself tempted by white hair, but I at least have to feature some blue. Now I'm going to be agonizing over different styles and which to choose!
Next stop, price checking!
it's a hard life choosing hair colour! good luck my love! i think directions blue are best =) and one o th cheapest x
Thank you again! π I'll make sure to share the results!
yes pleeeeeeeeease
Would diluting the dye also work for lightening the hue? I'm reluctant to buy green dye as well to only use a tiny bit.
Aaaand, shopping list! What am I forgetting?
- 1x Directions Lagoon Blue dye
- 1x Crazy Color Bleach Kit Peroxide 30 vol
- Contains Disposable Gloves, Mixing Bowl, Spatula, Tint Brush, 2 x Bleach Sachets (25g), 100ml Cream Peroxide 30 Vol. (9%)
- 1x Dye Head Cover
- 6x Mini Bulldog Hair Clips
Also need to buy some white vinegar. Should be able to find that locally. :3 Just the above list from Beeunique.
well with your hair length i would say more lik 2-4 tubs (if you're wanting all over colour)
vinegar i got from waitrose =) but the rest looks fine. you may need more bleach though =s
Okay, I'll add another of each to the list. Any leftover I can use for touchups later. Gonna keep some white though, I think! Currently thinking I'll try to keep the tips white.
sounds good, but it could be quite difficult. maybe vaseline to tips everytiime you wash for a barrier, otherwise it'll bleed into it
