Plummy pink

Hi! Just registered here - I just realised that it's finally time to try some unusual dyes for my hair, I'm at my forties after all... Maybe this will become my signature granny-style, who knows  ;D. My natural hair color is dark blonde / dirty blonde and I plan to start experimenting without bleaching it. But who knows what will happen in the future...

This is something I try to achieve first, total inspiration! I'm pretty sure that the color in here is photoshopped (have seen the exact same image with other colors, too).

Had a feeling that this kind of result could be achieved with pinky/plummy shades over a dirty blonde base - perfect starting point for me. Unfortunately my first experiments were not total success - but back to them later in another thread!

This is my starting point. Hair is mainly in it's virgin state, but I lightly bleached my tips last summer. My hair is naturally wavy and it does not like to be styled straight. However, although it looks frizzy most of the time, it's in relatively good condition. I was able to comb it through with ease after deep cleansing, so I suppose the direct dyes will have hard time in this head...

After one bottle of Crazy Color Pinkissimo I got this just slightly unreal shade of red. The pink shade is most obvious in direct sunlight - and the color is quite "normal" in diffused light like on the pic below. I guess that I need more plummy shade and lots of time, the next in line is Crazy Color Aubergine mixed with Pinkissimo. However I would not like to go too dark, maybe I'll dilute the shade at least a bit to get that slightly faded pinkish look instead of full on aubergine. Wish me luck!

Just to explain, I merged these posts and moved them as neither really fit into the sections they were in. πŸ™‚

The problem with using photoshopped photos for inspiration is, well, they're nigh on impossible to replicate most of the time. This one in particular is going to be incredibly hard as you'll never get the natural looking highlights or the richness, though at the same time, lightness that are in that photo, so it'll always look different and probably disappointing.

You really need to knock a lot of the gold out of your hair before you can get that shade. I don't have time to type anymore right now, but someone else should be able to help πŸ™‚

From the photo, I would say that the girl had a balayage and then the pink was photoshopped into the blonder color.
That would be good start for you as direct dyes only stick to pre-lightened hair.
You can then tone out the yellow tones with some purple shampoo/toner/diluted purple dye and that will give you a nice base for this pink.
Crazy color Burgundy mixed with pink looks like a good match, you may have to dilute it though.

Oh sorry - I thought that the other threads were for own pics and did not think that there was a no-photoshop limit in the inspiration pics *thx*. For me the inspiration pic is just a direction - I'm not after 100% replication of the look, but I want to achieve a nice plummy pink shade toned down with natural blonde undertones - a shade that looks fine against my skin. And I'm paler to that model girl, definitely!

I did the Aubergine dye - and the tone is now significantly cooler - and much more bright pink. The lightly bleached tips and some natural highlights took very intense magenta shade giving a subtle ombre look. I think I'm trying to rinse this over with blue based violet once or twice just to cool it down slightly more. It looks pretty good already but now it is too dark to take more pics. I was deciding between Burgundy and Aubergine - and chose the latter for the slightly more blue undertones, thought that they would play down the gold in my lengths.

I haven't dyed my hair... ...say in 7 years (except that tip bleach last summer) - but I've had several successful dyes over non-bleached hair with direct dyes. Naturally it's impossible to go to lighter shades or achieve the brightest tones, but at least my hair takes quite decent tint from direct dyes. Probably my hair is quite porous? Honestly, it's truly annoying, baby soft and feels very silky and slinky on fingers - but give any wind and / or humidity and it is one frizzy, wavy mess. I often just let it dry freely and scrunch in bit of some creamy product to keep the waves slightly smoother - and that's it.

These muted shades are really difficult to achieve. (Not at all relevant here, but on a fully bleached base i have had success layering pastels over a medium silver, and also by adding Nirvel artx in Grey to other diluted colours, it 'muddies' them quite nicely.)
You need to add violet tones to cancel out the yellow in your base. That is what is creating the red tones, pink and yellow together make orange/red.
I would use a very cool toned pink/purple such as Virgin Rose, Rose Red or Cyclamen if you want a Crazy Colour alternative, heavily diluted in conditioner. You may need to add more blue/violet if it is still too orangey, (CC Hot Purple for example)
You can layer these dyes over each other to build up to the shade you want, or just keep trying various mixes on a strand.

^Thanks, that is probably exactly what I'm going to do.

The bathtub looked like someone butchered an unicorn there... ...Aubergine dyed the water bright pink but the tub stains were violet  :P.

Edit - typo...

It wasn't that (though photoshopped photos do muddy the water). It's just the the photo sections are for showing off hair once you've got what you want and as you were basically asking how to get this colour, it's better off in this section. As an inspiration photo, it would have been better in another thread that's already there πŸ™‚

I might be wrong in moving them, but I knew you'd get more suggestions in this section.

Yes, I do get that - just tried to clumsily explain my wrongdoings! Thanks! I edited the posts to make this thread more readable, it's not necessary to repeat the images.

I quite like where this is going. I think that I'm going to cut the bleached ends after my next hair wash. I try to maintain - and gradually adjust the tone with some conditioner + color and see where this goes. I need that blue toned violet for adjusting - and I still have plenty of Aubergine for maintaining the pinkiness. That stuff was a pigment bomb...

I've liked the pinkish/plummyish tones on my hair quite a bit - and was able to cut the warmth with some violet dye. BUT now my bleached ends have quite perfect faded and muted pink tone  *loveeyes*. And the shades that are intensive enough to show on the darker part of my hair darken it too much, the subtle ones last one wash or two. And...  ...I really want to see more that nice pastel hair on my head!

So, I've decided to let this fade and bleach my hair before the next round. Perhaps I'm going to go for some ombre technique like puerkz suggested - I'm not ready for constant root bleaching. Not scared of those warm tones my hair tends to get with cautious bleaching, the violet dye seems to take the warmth off very well.

The bleach perhaps on the end of this month (depending on how quickly this fades) and after that I plan to experiment with Directions Carnation Pink (or Flamingo), Lavender & Violet. I might even want to try bluish purple shades after the pinks. Teal would be awesome as well  *whistle*...
