Hellloo there, ive been trying my best to get to a pinky purple like the picture attached and been failing, my story so far!
I was blue, it faded to turquoise and grew most of it out. Bleached it, so roots were light orange/blond, tips stayed turquoise/very faded blue.
So i put on Dark Tulip, it went more a reddish pink than a purple pink.
Then i used one tub of Dark Tulip one tub of Violet and a quarter tub Lilac. The tips (which had stayed turqouise ish after bleaching) went the colour like the picture, wooot! roots on the other had still a reddish pink, not the purple pink i wanted.
Soooooo then i put plum on... well yeah its a very dark purple/blue now :s I have a feeling from what i've read about the bad batch of plum it will fade to a turquoise. Which il let it happen naturally.
So how would i get the below picture colour from there? Violet mixed with rose red or dark tulip. Or should i risk a plum and mix that with a rose red or dark tulip....
Ive been reading through all the forums on here and i couldn't find an answer i was looking for, so i do apologize if i have written a post that may have all ready been answered.
Many Thanks!
oops forgot to say its Directions that im using and thats the only hairdye i can easily get hold of

I think the new formula Plum always fades to blue then turquoise. I have achieved that colour with Plum and Rose Red, but it was the old formula Plum that faded pink. I don't know what the new Plum would do, I have given up on Directions and am trying other brands now. If it fades bluer you could top it up with more Rose red or Cerise. When mixing, add less Plum than you think you need, I have noticed the new Plum goes a lot darker after 5 minutes in the mixing tub.
I would do just that, force fade it and then according to what blue you get, just add a pink over the top.
Think about mixing paints. If you wanted a purple from a bluer purple, it makes more sense to add a pink or red rather than adding another purple 🙂
I would actually argue that colour is actually pink, rather than purple, anyway.
I got that colour with about half of a tub of Rose Red diluted with an equal amount of conditioner (because that stuff is crazy pigmented) and about a teaspoon of Plum if that. You just need enough to nudge the magenta in the direction of purple.
@wicked pixie, over what colour were you dying? as il have to work in the faded colour to the colour equation :p
But yeah wasnt expecting the plum to have such a blue hue to it, hence why maybe violet a better choice to mix with.
(ps, your doggies are so cute!!)
@janineb, thank you! yeah i want sure if that was classes as a pink or a purple :p im wondering if the rose red is a better choice than dark tulip, as i think the dark tulip has tones of purple in... not sure
I put it over a faded pink. Rose Red is a purer magenta pink, dark Tulip is a warm purple with red tones. I prefer Rose Red for mixing. Dark Tulip over a bleached base is not dissimilar to your goal pic so I suspect the reason you are getting red tones is that your base is too dark and orangey.
I agree, rose red comes out a beautiful colour and would be good for achieving a shade like that.
Virgin Rose. I know, it's not available just now but defo that. it will fade to pink though. I just used it neat and it did very similar, but it was super pink in bright light
Your plum should fade to a turquoise-ish color, or if it still has blue that would be fine. Just wait for it to lighten up then I would use Rose Red over it, or if you have access to it at all, Virgin Rose. I got that same color using Virgin Rose and Pravana Violet (a GREAT violet if you ever need it for mixing, it's a true, very balanced violet), but that was over pink. So really I think just adding some cool pink over it will do the job, and if it's too pinky just make a violet toner to put over it.
Ohh that's gorgeous! I had a fuchsia like color like that but I made it mixing red and purple, mostly Pravana and Adore. (And oddly WAY more red than purple since the purples were heavily pigmented and blue.) And word of warning, Pravana IS amazing, but you need the tiniest drop of that violet, if at all, especially coming from blue toned fade, and especially since you just went too dark purple with the Plum, you don't want to do that again. You will need way more red pink like I did, even more so. And if you go to full on with deep colors like that it will be super dark. But I think one thing that might help you is to dilute the dyes with silicone free conditioner instead of full on. That will get you a lighter kind of mask/tint as opposed to deep saturated color change and it seems like that might be what you need, once it fades. If it fades that blueish-turq way, I'd say don't do a violet. It will keep coming out too purple. Def what Janineb said, more red-pink, taking into account the shade of the fade. I'm not too familiar with Directions so I did a quick search and I agree for Rose Red for this. Try a strand diluted first to see how it takes/changes and add more color/go from there. This way you don't over do it all at once, or can modify if you don't like it. And then what Katie said, you can adjust overall with a toner if needed, but get close first by testing. (That's how I like to do it, and I don't mind variations in streaks, some people do.) And once you get it, it will fade pinky.
In the meanwhile, enjoy the purple, that's pretty too 🙂
Its a lovely colour.
I got that colour with my first application of Rose Red over a light ginger base. Although second time it came out a lot more pink, i guess because my base was more of a light banana shade that time.
Ok thought a picture update would be good. This is the result of directions Plum hairdye. It was one pot plum to 1 and half measured out pot of conditioner. It came out very much black/purple. It has now had 4/5 washes with a anti dandruft shampoo.
Just to point out before this my hair had been dyed with 1 tub Dark Tulip mixed with 1tub Violet and a small amount of lilac.
So I'm off on holiday, lots of Sun and swimming which will fade it all probably turquoise. So the question is just lots of Rose Red or a Rose Red with Dark Tulip?
Btw I am loving this colour, but I just want a more pinkish purple that is bright, than a blue purple. Also for some reason my hair colour always gives me different shades and tones, didn't do anything special just stuck on hair dye evenly. Pretty cool though ^^
I think Rose red diluted with a bit of conditioner should give a good pinky purple over that.
I agree, I will always suggest rose red though because I love it.
one more question (sorry for constantly bugging)
I can order a pack of four different directions. So plan was rose red of course, but when my hair colour fades lighter would it be best to then also have plum so i can mix it with either one or more of the following rosered/tulip/dark tulip, just so i can keep a more pinkish purple, than a reddish pink.
O actually two question, now my hair has faded more, woot! apart from the front section the rest hasnt been bleached, any idea what colour rose red would go on medium dark brown?
looking forward to more hairdye colour experiments *yay*
