My friend currently has box dyed orange hair, she wants to get to Kelly Osbourne Lilac.
I've suggested she spend a few weeks fading by washing with H&S, Bicarbonate of soda etc. After that we were going to try a couple of boxes of Jo Bazz Max, and then after a week of fading washes (to stop it re-oxidising) start doing bleach baths a fortnight apart until we can get to inside of a banana yellow and start toning.
Does this sound okay and do you think it's possible if she takes her time? Also I have some questions: -
Which is the best bleach to use? (I used Jerome Russell on mine but I noticed some of you don't rate it?)
If we can't lighten her hair enough to get it lilac what colour would cover orangey yellow well apart from red and orange? (as she's already used both colours) I suggested maybe a Raspberry?
Would she be able to use heavily diluted Directions Violet and / or Plum to get a lilac colour if we can get her base light enough?
Which is the best toner to use?
Thanks : )
I think that's a very good plan! You could get her to do her washes with lilac shampoo to get rid of brassyness? I use Jerome Russell in bleach baths and I think it's fab π
Would she need a specific purple shampoo? Or could we just add purple dye to shampoo to make one? They sell Touch of Silver pretty cheap in Bodycare / Home Bargains - would that be okay? Thanks : )
The touch of silver one is quite good!
Oh good, ill just get that then (cheap and effective - you can't go wrong!)
Sounds good! Be prepared, though, for it to take a long time. I'm doing the same and my lengths still have very stubborn gingery tones that I don't think will be heading anywhere in the next few months. I'm staying at the slightly patchy, slightly warm blonde stage for a while. I've been lightening for about two months and I think it's likely to be another three before my base would be even enough for lilac.
I have warned her - and I suggested she might want to think of an "interim" colour if her base sticks at yellow and takes a while to lighten up. I suggested maybe diluted crazy colour violette or diluted Directions Violet, as neither lasted that long on my hair, I know they will take over a yellowish base and would both (hopefully) help to tone the yellow as it fades out?
Tell her to go with diluted violet, I did that last year two times in a row and it succeeded in bringing my hair to an ashy/grey colour, when it had originally been quite yellowy/ginger.
Theodora was it Directions Violet? And how much did you dilute it by? Thanks
It was Directions yes, I can't remember the proportions exactly as I just kinda eyeballed it.
Here is the thread with pictures:

Oh yes, I remember seeing that thread. I think she would be happy with that result (it's not far off what she's aiming for) thanks guys : )
Keep in mind it was my second application though! The first one, because my hair hadn't been thoroughly toned yet, it faded to more of a dusty pink colour, but the second one, bingo, it removed most of the leftover warmth.
Okay thanks : ) I think I've managed to explain that in between her hair may be all sorts of weird and wonderful colours as its best to take the bleach bathing slow. Fortunately she's more concerned about her hair staying healthy than fast results
