Neutralising blue with orange? Has anyone done this?

So I dyed my hair purple and at first it was gorgeous, really rich and lovely. Then after a couple of washes it went weird- the top part of my hair went pink and the lengths have slowly faded through purple to blue. Currently my hair is a peachish pink on top and pastel blue through the lengths. At first I thought it looked kinda cool but I'm growing to hate it. The pink I think I can remove fairly easily, but in my experience blue is really stubborn.

I've heard that when it comes to neutralising colour you're supposed to use opposites on the colour wheel and the opposite of blue is orange. I tried a peach toner to try to neutralise the blue but it didn't really touch it. I'm thinking I maybe need something with a more orange tone to get rid of the blue. I'm not expecting it to go back to blonde, but maybe a light brown? Something that's easier to work with than the current blue. Is this possible or am I being stupid?

EDIT: Forgot to say, I've already tried anti dandruff shampoo, vitamin c and washing up liquid.

Yes, an orange will neutralise blue, you need about the same depth of orange as the blue you are covering. It won't necessarily be a pretty brown though, but a good enough base to put a brown dye over.
If you want to get the blue out, try a colour remover or the bleach powder/shampoo/oils method

Hi there! Going through a similar change. I had faded purple then dyed semi perm black over it. It then turned a very weird light ashy blue with (or a few other weird shades) So I did another go of the semi perm black. After 3 washes it is a weird navy blue with some blondish coming through.
Anyways...I have my reddish/burgundy dye out to go over the blue... which I know will turn more purple. But I am kind of scared to do orange over blue. Please show pix or update how it turned out ! πŸ™‚ Thanks ~Erica

I did it the opposite way and used blue (well Directions Turquoise, the old formula ) to tone down faded Nuclear Red which was pretty orange and it definitely worked - I used Adore over it in various brown or auburn colours and the bright orange-red never came back through the fade.

My user pic is of adore orange blast over faded crazy colour capri blue.
The top 5/6" was light brown (stopped bleaching hair in July and my natural auburn had bleached slightly due to the bleach powder/shampoo/oil washes) the mid lengths had faded to blonde but the final 3/4 inches were still a pale green/blue that wasn't fading anymore.

It coated it all and made it all one colour. After first wash the top had gone a bit redder then the bottom but it's still very orange and not blue in the slightest, it's been completely irradicated.

As an aside I'm never using CC capri blue, such a stubborn colour.
