Hi all!
I'm looking to dye my hair to a very light ash brown. The ash part is really important though, as I want it to look more ashy than brown really!
My hair is currently fairly close to my natural colour of mousy brown, but it does have a few red undertones in it from past dyes. The last dye I used was an 8 wash nice n easy light ash brown dye, which has now completely washed out. I found it to be slightly too dark and not ashy enough.
I'm looking for the best ashy semi-permanent dye on the market (preferably in a dark blonde type shade as I'm looking to go lighter as opposed to darker).
I bought a nice n easy 24 wash 'medium ash blonde' dye the other day but having read a few reviews about it since I'm worried that there will be red undertones.
Can anyone recommend a really good semi permanent dye (or even permanent if it's really good and not available in semi permanent) that is as ashy as I'm looking for? From past experience most ash dyes don't turn out the way id hoped. I still want it to look natural, just more ashy than box dyes labeled ashy usually seem to be!
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
If you want a very ash result something like Pravana silver over the top of your current colour. It is a direct dye, but a professional quality one so will last better than 8 washes
Using oxidative dye (permanent or semi permanent) is lifting your natural colour and revealing warm tones in your base. So either stick with direct dyes as they dont lift (they don't use peroxide) or lighten your hair to one level above the colour you actually want before using an ash dye in the shade you want.
Thanks for your reply! If I did use something like Pravana Silver would this look like a natural hair colour? Or would it turn it actually silver/grey? Would using touch of silver shampoo on my current hair do the job I'm hoping for over a longer period of time do you think?
Thanks!
Have attached a couple of photos of the type of colour I'm looking for. Something somewhere I between them both.
It will just tone it ashy unless your hair is light blonde.
It would be easier to advise if you add a pic of your current colour
Sure! Here is a picture of my hair at the moment. The camera seems to make it look slightly lighter than it appears in reality. It also doesn't look so reddish in natural daylight. It looks this way with indoor lighting.
Thanks!
I would say it is too dark and too orange for silver dyes to have much effect.
You are going to have to lighten beyond orange. So either bleach or a permanent dye, to one level above that which you require. then you can tone out the warmth.
To tone your current colour to an ash shade it would be a very dark brown.
Thanks for that! To be honest looking in a mirror it doesn't look nearly as orange as it does on camera, but it is very warm and has lots of underlying red tones in there I think. I guess that's why the cameras picking it up. Do you think I should dye it with a permanent dye in a light ash blonde shade, and then follow up with a toner of some description?
Thanks for your help, I'm not very experienced in toners etc as have only really either dyed my hair myself with a standard high street dye or have had it done at a hairdressers. Looking to do it myself from now on to save money so would be great to learn!
