Most forgiving Turquoise?

Hi there!

Looking into re-bleaching my hair as I can't live without Turquoise hair. I'm going to a hairstylist so I can give Olplex a try, she's letting me buy my own dye but doesn't belive that crazy colors actually work (I used peacock blue for a while and it was pretty awesome). Anyways, my hair will most likely be a level 7-8. Which dyes do you recommend? I was looking into getting either arctic fox or the pravana neons.

Thanks!

I like Adore's Aquamarine.

I'd do the turquoise at home. It's always better and more vibrant if you can leave it on for a few hours, which can't happen at a salon.

I actually like Manic Panic Atomic Turquoise best. It's been changed recently and is now more like Directions Turquoise used to be.

I'd actually prefer to do the direct dyes myself... but the  hairstylist didnt totally get it ... at least she's letting me buy my own dyes so that's something!

Extra question... if I want to have a CYMK system (I love mixing my own colors!) Which ones would you recommend?  I'm definitely struggling with the yellow.

Thanks!

So why can't she just bleach it and then you go home? You'll be paying a lot for something you can probably do at least as well as yourself.

Maybe Directions Daffodil for the yellow? I'm assuming you mean to mix all your own colours from home from a small range of colours? I wouldn't suggest that as there isn't many pure colours in direct dyes. Most are already made up of other colours so they aren't as simple as that.

I have this thing of not trying to upset this lady... I think it's the one thing that I'm very British about!  Yeah so I was thinking about recreating primary colors..  My only real experience has been using Peacock Blue /  Pine Green / Violet Gem / Virgin Rose and Velvet Black to create purples and teals /aquas. It's the reds / oranges / yellows that I have no experience with . So basically I just want to turn the cyan/turquoise greener and create custom made purples.

If she's so easy to upset... is it worth going to her...?

So you want the range of colours in the CMYK one at the same time? And you want to mix the red and yellow? Or these colours at different times? Sorry, I'm confused!

I think rather than aiming to do it from a completely CYMK basis you might be better just using colours that have the tones you want at the time as you were doing with the violet gem etc. I think you would struggle to find a true yellow or Magenta in a dye, even a direct dye. (I'm an artist and I mix all my own paints through CYMK and I wouldn't attempt it with hair dyes! )

Just a quick reply on this! I had swatches (that husband threw away)  but anyways... the bottom line is that pretty much any green and purple can be created, oranges were not too bad  but were more of the pinky / yellow sort. Red is impossible to recreate . SO I think those three plus a red would definitely give a lot of options. I haven't tried the black yet , so I'll keep you posted!

Remember to bear in mind that the colours you are mixing will fade at different rates, so you may create a great purple that very quickly pulls pink if the blue fades more quickly. I had this issue with some of the auburn colours I mixed resulting in weird fades.

True reds are quite hard to come by in direct dyes anyway, a lot of people use a cool toned red and a warm toned red mixed to create their own. In theory if the dyes truly were Magenta, Cyan and yellow you would be able to create a true red from them, but they won't be exactly the right colour to do so.

(incidentally, I mixed sfx nuclear red with directions alpine green yesterday, hoping that an orangey red and a bluey green would make brown but was very surprised to find that they make a bright purple! I'm guessing that alpine green is VERY blue based and relies on yellow tones in the hair to pull it back to green. I know I could add other colours to make the brown but these are the two dyes that last longest on my hair so I was hoping to harness their staying power but make a natural colour!)
