Mixing black with lighter colours?

Recently I've been very into darker colours on my hair. By dark I mean shades of navy or green that are darker than the likes of after midnight blue or green envy, which seem to be some of the few greens/blues which aren't super bright. Doesn't stand out lots but is very pretty πŸ˜›

My hair is currently very dark green; almost black; with a lovely glossy emerald shine to it and slightly varying levels of colour. It's definitely noticeably green, but it's not bright or loud even in the sunlight. However I got it by trying some blue dye on top of MP Green Envy before it had actually faded much/at all so it's not something I can keep doing to keep the colour.

I was wondering how it'd work if I mixed black with a lighter colour, even if only a tiny bit? I'd love to toy with the idea; near-black shades with pink, blue, green etc. tones but am unsure if it'd work due to the base colours of black dyes and how much it'd take over πŸ˜›

Anyone tried mixing black(semi permanent of course) with brighter colours to darken them before and how did it go?

Here are some examples of what I mean or nearso:

I should note that my hair is prettty dark naturally and does not take well to semi dyes when unbleached so trying that wouldnt work too well ):

Adore blue black would be a good base for your colors. Its black which fades blueish green.

I'm doing something similar with my last colors and I plan to go with this for the winter season.
I did a mix with atomic pink/blue velvet bottom and directions ebony/blue velvet top, since I wanted to blend my roots better.
My directions batch was very red based and looked more brown than black when applied on yellow base.
I thought it would make a swampy color with blue, but it turned out a really deep blue black.  *1*

I should take some pictures, I keep on forgetting. I'm really interested what the experts here have to say about this. Great topic!

A friend of mine mixed some blue, purple and green dye leftovers in Directions Ebony. The result was an amazing color, very dark (probably not really black) with colored highlights, like those iridescent beetle wings... the highlights came out even more after a couple of washes.

Adore Blue Black looks nice but I can't find any pictures of it faded to see for myself ): I've never used Adore either so don't know much about their dyes.

Directions Ebony seems to be a good choice for mixing by the sounds of it; might try it! I have both Green Envy and After Midnight Blue to try and mix with some sometime. Curious about whether it'd be possible with a red or pink to make a very dark shade though, or if it'd only work with cooler colours.

I think ebony is green based (unless I'm remembering incorrectly) so I think mixing it with a pink/red would give you a muddy colour. I don't know if another black would be more suitable for this. I've never used black semis.

I just checked and apparently Ebony changed from green based to red based in July. I guess Crazy Colour Black for the green shades and Ebony for any reddy shades are my best bets then?

Ah sorry, I had green in my head, forgot about the changes. Yeah I'd say that sounds like a good plan, let us know how it goes πŸ™‚

I got blueblack on at the moment and its quite faded. I go back home from holiday tomorrow so i will try to upload a pic for you tomorrow.
I was going to originally suggest ebony but unfortunately they did change it to red base as they claim people complained that it faded green.
I personally used it because it faded green but oh well.

Adore is very good, they tend to be quite runny on their own but mixed should be fine. They are quite pigmented too ,which i really like.

I'm thinking about trying something like this so would really love to see a picture of your fade too πŸ™‚

I currently use a mixture of Adore blue/black and pravana blue to get a deep blue/black colour, but I can't help much with fades, etc, as I use it over a standard permanent black to give it more of a blue shine in the sunlight!  Works well for me, but if you wanted more colour, you could just have a lighter base.  For example, I had my hair dyed bright red, but decided I wanted to go black, and all I had was Adore blue/black and some Directions Midnight blue, so I mixed the two, and put it over the top, and it came out a very dark purple, that was black in most lights, but in direct light shined a blueberry colour.  Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures as it was extremely difficult to capture!

I get a similar colour to the first pic by bleaching my dark hair to dark yellow/light ginger and dying with a fairly even mix of directions midnight blue and sfx blue velvet. It's a really dark inky/navy blue, almost black in dimmer light to a vibrant deep blue in the sunlight.

Unlike most people on here I don't dilute my dyes, I aim to have them as concentrated as possible. I also keep my dye on overnight.

I suppose it could be even darker by adding a touch of blue based black, though I haven't tried this, the colour I have is dark enough judging by how quickly my greys are showing with regrowth.

Ive had ebony since then and it's definitely green based so maybe don't rely 100% on it being red based as there's likely still old stock about

ahh the old green-based Directions Ebony was amazing(i wish i had pics!)

I wanted a dark teal so i mixed ebony with Directions Enchanted Forest, over faded turquoise.

At first it was just black, with a tinge in green in really bright light only, so i washed it with some Head and Shoulders.

And wow... the most amazing dark teal with dark blue in some parts - it was so amazing, and looked different in every light.

Sadly it only lasted one more (not head and shoulders, but cone free stuff) wash and it became more of a green turquoise again, but it was so pretty!

Also confusingly (this was way before they changed the Ebony) - it looked red based, but it changed/developed into green (just looking at the stains on the rubber gloves as i was doing it) really weird. I wish they hadn't changed the formula, i like that i can go dark for one wash (never know what job interviews might be like!)
