Mint > cerise pink > bright orange

Hello,

Basically my end goal is to get to bright orange hair eventually. I had navy blue hair and bleached it to a mint and was told on here to work around the colour wheel front mint to get to orange rather than jumping to it. So... I put Directions flamingo pink on my hair. It's gone a lovely bright cerise pink.

My question basically is... when this fades from washing will the green come back through or will the pink have neutralised it a bit? My hair looks like a really clean pink. No muddy areas from the mint?

Secondly, how do I get from pink to orange in the future?

Thank you in advance.

The pink neutralises the green to an extent. Pink is a very strong colour (mid and darker ones anyway) and so cover a multitude of sins (which is why I suggested going that way round the colour wheel). What you need to do is dye it red before the pink is faded to a muddy colour, but it'll likely fade more purple pink. Then, as the red fades, start adding orange and eventually it'll be orange.

Thank you for your help.

What is likely to happen if I say jumped to orange from pink?

Like using a red based orange like special FX napalm orange or something?

I don't think you'd end up with a muddy colour or anything too disastrous going straight from pink to orange, but it might not be super-vibrant, if that's what you're going for. Fading the pink down a lot would give you a better result, but you might get an, um, interesting faded colour doing that (it's always a gamble!) Using an orange-based red, like Directions Vermilion, before a red-based orange would be the "safest" option.

That's great, thank you for your help. I have asked on other places and they've said to put a fluorescent yellow over it? Ah. I'm just not sure what to do! 😂

Will your advice work even if my hair is fading to a light purpley pink? The thing is, I want it bright orange so is it best to move to the red stage first and not just jump?

I've added a photo of what I have now (with about 3 inch virgin roots which you can't tell in the photo) and then a picture of what I'm aiming for?

The problem is, as you had quite a strong mint, that is going to mean there's a purple undertone to the pink. You need to gradually counteract that undertone. Do it too quickly and it won't work and the fade will be nasty quite quickly. It'll also be a lot darker/less vibrant than a bright orange as Tabitha says.

You'll get there, you just need to accept it takes time 🙂 I've been there numerous times, I know how it feels! I'm there now in fact, I have mint stained hair but I want to do red and orange on it, but because I really don't like purple on me I'm stuck and frustrated!

Edited to add, because you had posted just before me!

A yellow in this case would just make it muddy. I understand where they're coming from, but I don't think it would work. You could try a strand test.

Edited to add again because now I can see the photos!

If the second one is what you're after... just bleach your roots and put orange on them? Pink and orange is a fav of mine, so I think, even if you didn't mean that you want the pink, I think you should do that. The top of the pink would be fine to go over with orange and it'll give you a orange red pink ombre. It looks like the top is saturated enough with the pink to work fine. I'd add more pink to the bottoms though as I can see the mint starting to make it slightly muddy purple.

Haha. Thank you again for the numerous replys. 🙂

Yeah, the bottom picture is what I want but I don't think my roots are quite as long as where I'm wanting the orange to go to is the only issue. My roots cover about 1/3 of my head and I want the orange to cover most of my hair with just pink ends. I guess I could do it and give it a go. I think I need a different orange anyway as mandarin isn't quite as vibrant as I'm wanting I don't think.

I found Mandarin - Directions that is - to be really quite feeble; I wasn't impressed at all.

I agree that mandarin isn't a strong colour at all. I would suggest adore sunrise orange, this is a gorgeous orange colour!

What I'd do in your case is what's suggested and bleach your roots, put orange on that. And then keep doing this, so bleach the new roots and making them orange, and eventually you'll be at mostly orange and pink ends. I've grown out black like this and it usually looks fab. Even when you don't have long root section. If I look at your pics, if the roots are where the pink goes over into dark, it'll be fine.

Yep, this. It's the easiest way. I've done it too.

I agree that Directions Mandarin isn't that great, I find most Directions oranges and orangey reds can have a weird mustard/ brownish fade. Adore do seem better for this type of colour.

I've decided to ditch the mandarin and go for Manic Panic electric lava? Anybody ever used it?
