Making your own DIY silver/white toner.

Hello,
I have been reading a lot here about making your own toners for blonde hair using a touch of either blue or violet colour mixed into conditioner.  I normally use Directions white toner to get the colour that I like, but I would definitely be interested in mixing up my own to save some pounds!
I´m a bit confused as I am a complete newbie when it comes to doing anything with DIY hair colours, and there seem to be so many brands and shades of blue and violet that I don´t know which ones to choose.  I wondered if anyone could recommend which colour gives a nice silver tone to blonde hair?  Are all of the brands fairly similar, or do some have more staying power than other?  And finally, how long do you normally leave your DIY toner on?  Sometimes I leave my Directions white toner on for an hour, but I´m not too sure if its ok to leave a home-made concoction on for the same length of time.
(Sorry if this question is covered elsewhere...I´m still just feeling my way around these boards).
Thank you!

i've not used directions but I've mixed my own toner with manic panic ultra violet I use a tiny bit and a ton of condish, and put it on massage it in and watch the hair, when the yellow is gone and I see a hint of silver I rinse, its about ten minutes, if the hair is more on the orange side I'll use the teeniest dap of after midnight blue, this one is dark and crazy pigmented so you just want the littlest bit, but it can look very silver depending on concentration

I have used Directions to make toners. Violet dilutes well for a white or blonde toner, Neon Blue dilutes to a very similar shade to their Silver.
I have had the best results mixing my own colours from Rose Red and Neon Blue. That way you can control how pink or blue you want it. Just go easy if you choose Rose Red it is really, really strongly pigmented. I use a cotton bud to add tiny amounts

Thank you so much. I have some Directions Lavender and Violet and Manic Panic Purple Haze, but I'll try your suggestions first to see how I get on xx
