Hello! I am new here, I joined simply because I am looking for some guidance on what I should do to fix my hair. Before I explain, please please PLEASE do not suggest that I see a stylist because I am not gonna listen π
Ok, so naturally I would say that I am an ashy very dark blonde. Probably a level 6 I would think. I've been dying my hair forever, in the last couple of years I have been dying it a dark chocolate brown, I haven't died it in months though as I was really hoping to grow out my natural color. However, it looks disgusting at this point. It's very faded and lifeless looking, some parts are darker then others, there is a lot of red tones in it and orange. My ends are lighter from hot tub use. What I would love to achieve is my natural, dark ash blonde hair. I have a couple of inches of new growth that I do not want to alter! I've attached a photo for you all to see. I thought maybe I could get away with using a demi-permanent color in 8A (I choose two shades lighter as I hear they turn out quite dark), however - I did a strand test and it doesn't look like it changed the hair at all. Suggestions? Do I absolutely need to go lighter first before I color or is my hair light enough to get around this? I am trying to avoid bleach, further damage and altering my new growth.
Thanks!
Go see a stylist.
Just kidding! I wouldn't suggest it most of the time and this is something they tend to be horrible at anyway. They reach for the bleach too often.
First step is colour removers. You don't say where you live (country). Let us know and we can hopefully recommend a brand.
LOL too funny.
I'm in Canada! I've got a Sally's close by which is where I shop. π
Ok, I think in Canada your best bet is color fix. I'm not 100% sure if that's the only brand in Canada though. I don't think we have any other Canadian members at the moment to confirm either! I know it's available from US Sally's, so hopefully you have it there too.
But, if all you see is color oops, do not go for it. It's really damaging.
We do have colorfix, I've seen it there and almost purchased! Ok so, after colorfix - what would the next step be, do you think wella color charm demi 8A might bring me the the level I seek?
Wait and see what the result is as it's impossible to guess. You can use color fix up to three times. It really is worth doinh as a first step and could save you a ton of damage in the future. But the results can be unpredictable because of things like amount of times hair has been dyed, the type of dye, the brand of dye etc etc. There's just too many variables, so until we know what you get we can't move to the next step.
Hahah Janine you are a card! Seriously though, I've had salon colour corrections and it seems you get to choose whether you want it to go green or pink, but never the colour you ask for!
I'm in a similar position at the moment, I'm toying with the idea of trying to get closer to my natural colour which sounds about the same as yours, from a dark brown/ plummy sort of colour faded dye.
Definitely do the colour remover and see what you end up with, then I was thinking I might use a box demi perm in a dark ash blonde and then maybe try and mix something with Adore Honey brown and one of the darker ashy browns to keep it from fading brassy - depends what tones you come out with after the colour remover though and what you need to counteract. From experience though you won't be able to match your natural colour exactly and I think going slightly lighter is probably easier to grow out than slightly darker.
So funny, I am on the same journey! I can tell you what I've been doing. I have about 2-3 inches of new growth that I leave alone and then for the rest of my hair I have done color fix and tried to get as much old dye out as possible (using anti-dandruff shampoos and what not) and I did go to a salon, but only to get a color match from my mom (she's a stylist) and she has a keen eye for color, so she helped me pick 2 different semi dyes that I use about every 2 months and so far its been a good color match, but I know one thing to deal with in the summer is the sun lightening my hair so you may find something that works for a couple months but you may have to change in a couple months to combat natural sun highlights π
Ahhhh kicking myself now. Rather then posting what I ended up with I just went ahead and used the 8A on my hair after colorfix. It was late at night, I was impatient and figured no one would be able to answer me until today and could not see myself dropping my daughter off at school the way it was looking LOL. Darn!
It was actually almost a neat color, it looked like a natural ombre and I almost considered just trying to use a toner, but it was still very red. Some of the ends are really really close to my natural color. Anyhow, attached is how it turned out after the demi... it pretty much reverted back to it's original color. Still not happy with the red tones, there is almost a mahogany purple/red color to it that doesn't quite show up on camera.
Thoughts? Re-do colorfix and try again? Wishing I had of just left it after colorfix and shown you all, I could have maybe worked with that ombre! Doh!
EDIT:: Could I use a green-based ash tone over this to counteract some of the redness? And if so, does anyone know of one available from Sally's?
Yeah, that was the worst thing you could have done. You need to leave it a week in between using a colour remover and anything with peroxide. It generally does exactly what happened to you π
We're almost all in the UK. Late at night for you is often early in the morning for us!
Re do colour fix. Get some green dye, like Manic Panic or Special Effects. Add a small amount to conditioner and use that to tone the red. That way you don't have to wait.
Awe damnit! Sabotaged my own progress and bank account LOL. I'll give it another go, but might take a couple days break. Thanks for the support!
Aww no, I hope you get it sorted soon, impatience was my downfall too, now 70% of my hair is stained green and won't even bleach out.
