Joico - Really Blue RB

Hi everyone. I have been using "Joico - Vero K-Pak *Chrome* - Really Blue RB #J33949" for about a year now. However on 2 instances I have had the colour turn out black. 3 applications ago, then a normal application, and now this last application it's black again. Calls to Joico have not helped and they simply do not have any suggestions as to why this has happened. Is anyone else familiar with this product and having similar issues? I have heard they were recently purchased and now the lines are being restructured so I feel this may be at play, though I haven't looked to far into that yet. If the colour is going to be un-reliable now suggestions for a similar colour would be great. The plus to the RB is that it lasts a super long time. I want a really rich, deep, electric like blue. Thanks in advance!

It sounds like it's color buildup, or your hair may have been more porous at the times it went black. Like if your color hadn't faded much and was still pretty saturated, adding more pigment is just going to make it even darker. Or if you'd been using a stronger shampoo or just doing things that open up the cuticle more, the hair may have just sucked up more color. Before you dye, try letting your color fade a bit more first, or dilute it with some conditioner.

Has the actual color from the tube looked darker? If that's the case it's possible they may have changed the formula/pigment manufacturers, or it could have been some sort of screw up with a particular batch or something. What I would do is take a white sheet of paper, swatch the dye on it, and every new tube you buy do the same and compare it .

If you do want to switch dyes, pravana blue and manic panic after midnight blue with a little bit of violet mixed in makes a really similar color. Special Effects Blue Velvet is a gorgeous darker blue too. Have a look at the gallery, there's a ton of examples of specific brands/colors, or just look at the blue gallery for some ideas πŸ™‚
