So I currently have crazy colored hair, that has been bleached (obv). I love it, but I'm kind of interested in maybe some day going to a darker brownish purple. Not just using a dark purple like Pravana violet, which creates a dark vibrant purple, but actually having a brownish base to it. My natural color was way too dark to accept semi dyes and would rinse out in one wash, and even then the tint was light. So I'm completely unsure how to go about this other than using a box dye of some kind of light or medium brown? And then going over it with purple like pravana? I could also do a "violet" box dye but they don't often work well and I'd be very worried about it becoming too dark to adjust later (usually they're like "plum black" or "dark plum brown"). I would assume that even if I have faded purple left over from my hair it wouldn't matter since I'm going to add it back in, but who knows. I also would think I should avoid mixing the purple into any box formula since (in my experience) the peroxides in the box turned the veg dyes green. Has anyone ever tried this?? I'm extremely hesitant to do this because I've spent so many years bleaching and once I dye it 'regular' there's a slim chance I'll want to bleach all over again. I'm attaching a picture as an idea.
I would just add yellow or orange to purple. They're opposite on the colour wheel so will cancel out some of the purple into brown. It would be an experiment though, you'd have to try mixing to get the right shade. Start off with a small blob of purple, then (keeping tabs of ratios) add in bits of yellow or orange until you get a shade you like. You might need to have a bit of pink and blue in hand to adjust levels if it turns muddy rather than a nice brown.
Never add direct/veggie dyes into permanent dyes.
Edited to add, I just saw the pics of what you want... They don't look at all brown to me...
You can get that type of berry toned purple by mixing red and purple. The more orange toned the red the more brownish the end result. The other way to do it would be to dye your hair auburn/red first and then put the purple over the top.
Definitely no need to resort to box dyes lol
Hmmmm. Well, I've done purple and red when I wanted fuchsia. I currently have purple (violet) with orange and it didn't turn brown on the overlap. More like a red. But I think just adding colors won't make it dark enough. I'll have to play with it.
You could start with a warm brown from Adore and add the colours to make it brighter.
I used to make similar purples years ago from the old Directions Plum (so a dark pink based purple, you could substitute SFX Deep Purple) mixed with one of their orange based reds (Fire or Vermillion)or Flame which is a burnt orange.
A deep, well pigmented purple should definitely be your starting point
Ok cool....do you think it would work to add a small amount of like Adore Cinnamon or Adore Bourdeux which are red and purple browns respectively? I have mixed purple with red before and it's a pretty color I just want to add alittle more depth and darkness (and the saturated colors are, but they run out so fast. I wonder if added a drop of brownish red would help with that)? But def yes to mostly purple, and I'd still add a little red as well since my purple is so cool toned.
I just looked over the 'unbleached' gallery and the colors over a light to med brown were the kind of results I was looking at. Almost like a tint compared to super staturated and bright, but I'd like it to last at least a little. My natural hair is too dark for it, but my hair is currently bleached so...I may be able to finally try that look. One day.
What purple do you have? SFX Deep purple with some orange/red added would get you pretty close to that shade. Deep Purple is almost black straight out of the bottle. Like all vivid purples it is pink rather than red based, adding the yellow (in the orange/red) is what will mute it. You could also try mixing a red and a blue, they can only make muted purples.
Bordeaux would be a good base, it is already quite plummy
I have Pravana Violet which is extremely dark imo. I've had a tube last me a year because I needed to dilute it so much. I have also used deep purple in the past and think they're pretty similar. I also have Pravana Red and Orange.
Pravana violet is much more blue toned than SFX deep purple, which is also much darker. i think a dark pink based purple would make a huge difference when trying to mix berry tones
Could I just add red to it to make it pinker based? I have like 4 bottles of it and doubt I'd buy a different purple. I just went to a local BS store and they have Crazy color but it's sooo expensive (to me) and I'm like...ehh idk...I really like how Aubergine looks though. I'm still not sure if I'm going to do all this, just trying to feel it out. I also don't want too much of a burgundy color.
You can add red, but that won't be the same as a pink based purple. Vivid purples are not made with red, it is a mix of cyan and magenta pigments, as red is not a true primary (it can be mixed from magenta and yellow) hence blue and red can only ever make muted sludgey toned purples, which in this case is the colour you want.
Although you say you don't want burgundy, and the pics look pretty burgundy to me.
Just try mixing tiny quantities and see if you can get a colour you like, that is what I do.
Get a box of 5VV/5Vb google image:'haircolor 5vv" Dyes with metallic salts like henna or permanent veg dyes will not work well with ammonia based dyes. Deposit only surface dyes like manic panic are fine to use with ammonia dyes.
