Morning all,
I thought I would post an update regarding my blue hair.
Having ditched Manic Panic Shocking Blue, I decided to try what CandyCatvomit had recommended to me a while back; that is Directions Atlantic Blue and Neon Blue mixed together, 50/50 split. I have long hair (never cut my hair in my life) so I purchased three of each which gave me complete coverage. Now to the results!
Finally, I have proper blue hair, just like CandyCatvomit! It’s amazing! Even my mum said “what you are blue!” which just goes to show how vibrant it is compared with Manic Panic, which is just overpriced btw. It’s utterly brilliant, the best blue dye ever! I originally had reservations regarding the neon blue because it looks purple in the tub but once applied on your hair it gives it a blue UV look to it! It’s immense lol! And the Atlantic blue is just a perfect royal blue colour. Mixed together it’s an unbeatable combination! What’s even more amazing is that it’s been three weeks now, coming to the end of four, and I am still blue! I’m serious! Yes, some hair near my forehead has lost its colour (because of cleansing my face am/pm) but the rest is still blue. No dodgy sea green fade out colour, not even purple! It just stays blue. Sarah is absolutely right. I can go four weeks without a redo of dye if I choose.
Thanks to everyone for the help and advice and a special thanks to CandyCatvomit and Sarah for their help and time. I really appreciate it 🙂
And thank you Directions for making the best blue dye combination ever at a good price!
🙂
So glad you got the colour you wanted. It's a great combo. Directions blues have a bad reputation but I think they're great. 😀
I have recently changed my blue colour from electric blue to blue haired freak and it was a waste of money and time. The colour was rubbish, didnt cover properly and faded away even without washing it.Im bit put off with those colours now so just ordered directions neon blue because i want a real bright blue that will last. never again will i buy blue haired freak!
and it came out mostly a sort of manky turquoise colour
This is a common problem and it usually happens if you haven't used toner on your har before applying the blue. If you have any yellow residue in your hair it will mix with the blue and create a blueish/green (just like mixing yellow paint with blue paint). So if anyone's looking to avoid this problem I'd strongly suggest you use toner to make your hair as white as possible before applying blue dye.
There's a user on the forums called "Typhoid" - not seen her around much lately but she's a blue dye expert and some of her posts give tips on how to go blue succesfully. Find her posts and see if there's anything helpful there.
So, I've just dyed my hair blue, with Directions Lagoon Blue, for the first time and all is grand. The colour's fading pretty quickly, which was to be expected, but I'm not sure how to go about dyeing it again. I intend to dye it the same colour, but would I need to bleach my hair again/ remove the colour, to achieve the same result?
nope, you'd only need to bleach your roots when they become too long for your liking. just put the dye all over your head, bleaching again is only damaging and 100% unnecessary.
As Fruitypebbles said, don't bleach your already bleached hair, it will damage it beyond repair. Be careful when bleaching the root growth too, try not to get too much of the bleach on the already bleached sections.
I re-dye my stargazer shocking pink every few weeks with just a little bleaching at the roots and the colour comes out just as vibrant as the first time. I've never tried blue but I'm sure it works the same way. If you want to keep the blue lasting a little longer then each time you wash your hair after you have dyed it you can add a little dye to your conditioner. It'll refresh the colour a little and slow down the fade.
Thanks guys, just what I needed to know and wanted to hear 🙂 I'll be sure to put some dye in my conditioner.
I've totally changed my mind and want blue hair again, and I believe I will also be attempting the mix of directions dyes, it sounds like they get really good results!
I didn't get particularly good results with SFX Blue Haired Freak either but I believe that this was because I didn't leave it on long enough while dying it, couldn't wash it properly, and was out in the sun too much. But still, I wouldn't really recommend it tbh. It gave quite a light fishbowly turquoise colour, which wasn't what I wanted.
i have just coloured my hair with directions neon and atlantic blue to the same 50-50 recipe that candycatvomit gave me and it is amazing. best colour i have done and i hope it lasts. blue haired freak did not work on my hair even tho i had bleached it to light blonde like mathurine advised and left no yellow or golden tones. thanks to candycatvomit and mathurine for help and advice from a happy bright blue smurf 🙂
I just colored the front of my fauxhawk with a mixture of SFX Fishbowl Blue and Blue Haired Freak; I wanted a slightly green, turquoise-y blue. It faded in two days! Without washing once! It didn't even fade to green; it just faded directly to grey, like the dye had never even been there. Two days! What a disappointment.
I'm going to re-bleach and try the Directions mix, possibly with Turquoise and Atlantic Blue. Hope it lasts at least a week!
the longest lasting I have tried is Blue velvet, however, it is a purple toned blue (I love the colour though) but It does last a good while compared to the others I have tried.
its the middle colour here:

Directions Neon Blue.
It came out a gorgeous dark blue that hardly faded, in fact I had to dye over it two times to get rid of it. It was exactly what I wanted. I also had good results with Lagoon Blue that faded into a nice baby blue for me.
Special Effects Blue Haired Freak didn't agree with my hair. It lasted as long as I rinsed it out, then as soon as my hair was dry and I went to straighten it the heat stripped it straight out and I was left with some awful grey colour.
i used the 50/50 neon atlantic mix and it's perfect! thanks guys, esp candycatvomit. i have perfect hair now =)
I want to dye my hair in about 3 weeks to a bright blue color but I'm having a hard time trying to decide which hai color would be nice. Which would be better manic panic shocking blue or sfx blue mayhem?
