I have lightened hair. Natural hair is medium to dark brown with grays. I am wanting to do my roots dark - like black or dark brown, but maybe dark blue or purple. The problem is that I don't want to have the dark color stain the rest of my lightened hair - which I will put bright colors on.
I have tried Directions black, but that just ran and stained the rest. Any suggestions?

Probably if you google "shadow roots tutorial" you'll find some good hits.
At a guess, I'd say slather the bits you want to keep light in conditioner then pin/hold them up while you rinse out the dark colour.
