Hello all,
I recently went from the colour in my avatar to Adore Medium Brown lengths and Enchanted Forest dip-dyed ends. It looked lovely when I initially did it but after washing a few times the EF has become darker and a much duller colour - in some lights it looks almost off-black. I suspect that rather than fade, what's happened is that the brown is bleeding into the green and toning it down.
I can't figure out logistically how to stop this. I know with different-coloured layers you're supposed to clip them away from each other but because it's dip-dyed I obviously can't do this - any run-off is naturally going to go down my hair shaft and over the green dip-dyed parts. I'm starting to think the only solution is to let it run its course and bleach-bath the ends every month or so to remove the colour buildup and create a lighter base to re-dye the Enchanted Forest over, which is annoying and will ultimately not do my hair much good. Can anyone suggest anything?
Maybe coat the green parts in a thick silicone-free conditioner before you start washing your scalp/ brown parts, you could even do this on dry hair. Then wash the brown using a sulphate-free shampoo and cold water, do a diluted vinegar rinse to close the cuticle, THEN rinse away the thick conditioner from the green parts again with cold water. Condition both parts with a leave-in instead of a wash-out product so you are limiting the amount of water you use.
Your green parts are not likely to get particularly greasy so shouldn't actually need shampooing. If you use a lot of styling products you would need to choose ones that can be removed by the cationic surfactants in conditioner, that means avoiding most silicones and some polyquats. There are lists of such products on long and curly hair websites. Basically I am suggesting a variation on the Condition-Wash-Condition method. 8)
Ah, this is an excellent idea, thanks! Not sure why I didn't think of conditioning first.
I haven't really been shampooing the green parts, just assuming the run-off shampoo will clean it enough. I already avoid silicones - I used to wash conditioner-only when my hair was curlier, and although I don't any more I still use cone-free styling products.
Would you mind posting a picture of how Adore Medium Brown turned out for you please? I'm really temtped to try that or the chocolate brown on my colour b4'd lengths but i can't find any decent pictures or swatches.
I have rainbow on the ends of my hair using special effects, punky colour, manic panic... I noticed that the red gets "sipped up" like a striped straw to about half the strand that it is on in various areas. It makes an interesting effect and I haven't figured out which of the three brands does it the most since I use them all.
Has anyone else had their hair seem to be thirsty for a color π I guess it is called bleeding, but makes a stripe up the strand a few inches...

This is probably the most colour-true shot I have of it, apologies for my scarily-lit face (I live in a converted mill which is really dark even with all the lights on and had to stand in direct sunlight to get a decent picture!) This was after a second redye and I didn't do a very good job combing the brown all the way down to the green parts, so the top of my hair is probably a more accurate indication.
I would have said it's a dark brown rather than a 'medium' brown (I'm trying out Sienna Brown next time to see if that comes out less harsh), and it's ash-toned which I didn't realise when I put it in - I did it over Virgin Rose so am quite lucky it didn't come out looking awful!
looks great! is your dress from toppers? if so i has it =D
Thank you! Wish the ends had come out more green than teal but I think that's probably what I get for dyeing it over pink, haha.
My dress is indeed from Topshop π DRESS TWINS.
Oooo that looks great! And I need ash base so that's fantastic. Thank you very much π
No problem, it's good stuff - I'd not expected it to be so pigmented given how cheap it is (hence the issues with the run-off dyeing my ends, I guess). Also the smell is GLORIOUS.
