I have some black clip in hair extensions which I use if I'm craving black hair (it just looks like the underneath is dyed black) Im pale too and had black hair for about 16 years! I'm happy to embrace my inner goth though πŸ™‚

Have you thought about using the Adore blacks instead?  The blue black is a nice colour (and blue based, so the fade should be quite blue/grey), but I don't have any experience of how they fade or what kind of staying power they have.  So far, I've only used the Adore blacks on a natural completely unprocessed base, which meant they washed out completely in about 2 washes, but others have reported good staying power on processed hair.

I'm having real trouble shifting Directions Ebony at the moment - it's left a strong green stain on all my hair. The top half in particular, which was virgin hair! In the past I've had trouble getting my natural dark hair to take any dyes, and in fact when I put the ebony on, it only looked black until the first wash. After 2 months of weekly bleach baths, most of my hair is now a gingery-yellow (it's awful, i'm wearing a lot of bandanas!) but it still has a green cast in a lot of places.

The ends of my hair, which were processed before, have pretty much lost the green, but the top is really hanging on to it! Colour B4 didn't touch it. Personally, if I want black again I'll steer clear of ebony πŸ™ Such a shame.

I found that ebony fades green really quick and is a pain to get rid of, theres always this weird green cast over my hair even when I put something else over it.
Crazy colour black was awful I found, looked more brown than black- even though I only put it on to top up a box dye fade and didnt last very long, what a waste of time.
I've also used black box dyes: feria, live xxl- a pain to get rid of a few years back, nice n easy, casting creme gloss, herbashine.

I'm just addicted to black hair it seems, no matter if I have a slight change- see my threads on going rose red with the help of decolour. I always end up back here. πŸ™‚

I used ebony again last week, when its time for a top up I think I'll give adore a try.

Thanks everyone! I bought some xxl black box dye instead and planned to do just the top as black, leaving the rest purple, but now I'm being a coward and am too afraid to do the deed haha. I really want my black hair back but it was such a pain to get rid of that it feels like sheer stupidity to do it again... :s

I've been wanting black too for a while now but i'm loving my pink too much to add it yet. I was thinking of doing a reverse dip dye ( i.e black tips) but i am not sure if it would look too weird having mostly colored hair with black tips.

I think it would look awesome! You could always do a test first - put undiluted plum on the tips first (as it will look pretty much black anyway) if it looks good dye it black, if not the plum will fade out to purple and then back to pink?

That is a great suggestion, plus pink and purple look lovely together.
Thanks xxRaaxx

After three days staring at the XXL box I think I might wimp out and try a veggie black first. I just spent so long trying to get rid of it the first time it seems too stupid for me to do it again... I figure it should at least be easier to shift than a permanent box dye, right? Especially if I want to go green after? :S

ETA: I'm definitely going for Ebony. I'll just do it right before I go to Whitby to make sure it's looking nice and black, and then fade it out and put a green on top after. :3

You should be fine - the main complaint about veggie black seems to be the green fade - but if you're going green next anyway it shouldn't cause you any issues?
