Hi, I tried dying the front section of my black hair (Indian) yesterday to a bright electric blue. It's my first time dying so I'm not sure what went wrong but the end result was a dull dark blue black that's barely visible (pictures attached). I kept bleach (Manic Panic Flash Lightening 30 vol.) on for about 1 hour then washed with an SLS and Paraben free shampoo, no conditioner, cold water. It turned the hair honey blonde, kind of brassy. I blow dried then put on Manic Panic Virgin Snow toner for 1/2 hour. Applied heat, rinsed off with cold water. The hair seemed a bit more coppery. Blow dried then applied Manic Panic Shocking Blue evenly. Covered with plastic cap, applied heat, rinsed off with cold water after about 45-50 minutes. It turned my hair black with slight blue tints. I washed it with shampoo and warm water to make the colour lighter but that didn't really make a difference.
How can I fix this to the bright shade I want? Was the 30 vol. bleach not strong enough? Did I not leave the dye on long enough, or did I leave it on too long? Will it get better as it washes out? Should I wait for it to fade? Should I make it fade faster by shampooing? Should I use a bleach bath? Should I try mixing the blue with the toner to get a lighter shade and try again?
I'd love any advice!
It looks more like there was quite a lot of orange in your hair still. This causes blue to look very dull. For blue your hair needs to be well past Th orange strange and into the paler yellow stage to come out true blue.
So, you need to bleach a bit more, but the flash lightening kit isn't the best. You need a better quality bleach powder. Something like Blondeme by schwarkopf or blondor by wella. These will give much better lift, often in a shorter time. However, you do need to leave it at least a month before bleaching again. It can take bleach damage several weeks to really appear.
30 vol is plenty strong enough. Do not use 40 vol. you really risk very bad chemical burns and highly damaged hair if you do. 30 vol is enough with a very good quality bleach powder.
Also, you should have shampooed again after the toner. It acts like a conditioner and seals down the cuticle and forms a barrier making it hard for the dye to stick. You'll probably find what you have fades fast.
So, I would let the blue fade, then bleach in a month using a good quality bleach powder (you might have to get it online) in a bleach bath. You'll want to do a strand test before hand to make sure it's going to work well enough.
