Hi everyone!
I'm currently having a huge urge to do something different with ma hurrrr but I can't quite figure out the best way to get there.
At the moment, I have some very attractive mousy brown/blonde roots, with the rest of my hair a pink toned orange (to get here I went from bleached pale yellow, to pink, to purple, back to pink and then for my current colour I used Schwarzkopf fiery copper, diluted and mixed with Directions Cerise. I'll add a photo but I can't take one in natural light until tomorrow so it's the best I can do at the moment.
I have a few ideas for what I want to do. I want to basically go for either a dark (ish) muted pink, purple or red into a lighter pastelier (is that a word) version of that colour. My inspo is attached.
Now, my problem is, I have these lovely (ha) roots. I could throw a permanent colour on the top of my hair but I'm fairly certain that the roots will be a completely different colour to the part of my hair that is currently orangey, and I want the ombre to fall lower down than where my roots are currently, if that makes sense. So, do I bleach my roots and have a blank canvas before putting colour on? And then, do I use a permanent colour for the top part of the ombre? I don't want it to be bright at the top, and it seems that any semi permanent colour I can find ends up being bright unless it's diluted, but then obviously it will be pastel and that's not what I want for the top. But, if I use a permanent colour for the top half of the ombre I will be damaging my freshly bleached roots and the hair that has been previously bleached and coloured, and my hair isn't in fantastic condition so it won't thank me for that! And then what happens if I decide to change it in six months (which will undoubtably happen!) it'll be horrible to try and get permanent colour out.
So, do I bleach my roots and use semi-perms only? Seems like a better option, less damage and more freedom to change it, but can anyone recommend semi colours that will give me what I want? Directions dark tulip or plum seem like a good top half colour, but I've not used them before, will it beπ a bright colour?
I don't want to go to a hairdresser, I've been bleaching and colouring my own hair for 6 years so I'm fairly confident when it comes to actually doing the bleaching and dying so helpful DIY tips are much appreciated π
Adore do quite a lot of natural shades you could use for the top that are direct dyes, but you may have a problem with them running down and muddying the lower portion of the ombre, you might be better with something that is a deep berry colour at the top and then can be diluted towards the ends so it doesn't matter if it washes down a bit.
I agree I think the bleeding might be a problem, but you said you are pretty confident doing your own hair, so I still think it can be done. I think the trick is going to be really keeping a line of separation in your hair while doing the dark color and only pulling it down a couple inches from the scalp and it will naturally travel down the hair shaft a little bit, then wash that completely out and seal it. I've had some luck with sealers lately really keeping my color vibrant and run free. My mom gets them for me from her salon so I don't remember the brand but you could probably find something similar online.
So after you have the roots done and sealed then I would work on the light ends. I'm actually topping up my ombre effect this weekend and this is the exact process I take, I even sometimes wait a few days between doing my roots and my lengths just so that I can get the worst of the bleeding out before my light color even toughs my hair, it takes more time, but for me its worth the results that I get.
I really like the color, you could do a really pretty ombre with pink once your ready for a touch up
