Greetings, hair gurus!
Let's start with background: I am a natural light blonde, hints of strawberry, and has always been long with short stints of above the shoulder cuts. I've had virgin hair until recently when I decided I wanted to have some fantasy hair colors.
About 4 months ago, I went to a professional who bleached my hair (only needed one shade lightening), then we did some mermaid hair where I had silver on top with purple, blue, and green layers. I loved it! But I got but by the purple bug, and on my next visit 2 months later, we did a darkish purple/blue on top with a fade into lighter purple on the end. Drastic change but pretty, and I knew it would fade out lovely.
However, I have decided I am too low maintenance for this fantasy hair color life. And too much of a penny pincher to pay almost $300 every 8 weeks to maintain this look (even though it IS worth it to go to someone who's a color professional).
Being that my natural shade it pretty light, I was hoping that with time, all the color would just fade out and it wouldn't look too terrible. I'm currently at 8 weeks since the purple/blue dye job and I'm at that awkward stage of it looking cool and also like a mess.
I'm reaching out to anyone who can help me fade the color faster (I've been doing hot showers vs cold and more frequently). I don't know what I'm doing in terms of trying to dye it at home, and I want to get the integrity of my hair back as it's definitely suffered since getting bleached (I'm doing coconut oil and conditioner treatments which helps, just don't want to dye it again if I can help it).
Thanks for the help!!!
OK first question: do you realllllllly want to go back to blonde or do you want to keep having fun colours in your hair?
(It can be done at home for a tiny fraction of what salons will happily charge you and can last for weeks or even months with proper care, without cumulative damage)
There are many ways to fade hair colour out, you're on the right track with washing it hotter than usual - have a read of this thread or look for the bleach powder, shampoo & oils method - but if you want to go back to your base colour quickly you could go right ahead and use a colour remover (not colour stripper, that's damaging).
Pretty much all fading tricks are drying to the hair so you'll want to follow up with a nice, quality, silicone-free conditioner or hair mask.
Np, I don't "really" want to back to normal, but I am pretty low key and maintaining colorful hair is a lot of work for me, I've realized. I've only done box dye hair color to myself once before , so I worry about how good/bad a home dye job would turn out.
If I attempted to dye it at home, with partial new growth/partial old with color/bleached locks, would it come out looking janky? I work in a professional setting so while they're ok with my crazy hair color, I don't want it to look bad, either.
Thank you for replying!!
Most people on here do their own colour, and most came to it as complete novices but learnt as they went along, there's a lot of really useful info on here that can increase your knowledge base and confidence really quickly if you have a read through.
I recommend that you read the tutorial on how to do a bleach bath so that you are able to touch up your roots yourself. I have naturally fair hair and found that I only needed to use a 10 vol developer in my bleach bath which really didn't cause too much damage at all (with your hair having a natural red tint though it may not lighten as easily as mine which is very ash).
There are some really excellent dyes you can use that are really long lasting. I recommend the Special Effects range (I used to use their reds and they lasted a good 6-8 weeks!) but Directions and Adore also have some lovely shades that are really long lasting.
Don't forget that topping up your colour with direct dyes is not damaging so you can do it as frequently as you like, and if you just bleach bath your roots each time they grow through then each band of hair is only going to be chemically processed once, which is healthier than repeated lightening all over.
If you're willing to put in the effort into learning to do it properly then you'll be able to create some really great colour effects at home (my hairdresser when I had the bright red used to say she wouldn't dream of asking to do my colour herself as she wasn't confident she'd be able to get it as bright and even as I did at home!)
