Help me choose an Adore red dye for use over dark unbleached hair

Hi hair dye gurus!

I’ve been doing research on this site about semi-permanent colors for a while, and this is my question!

I have dark brown hair with about 5-10% gray. I’ve been hennaing it with body art quality henna for years, but would like to try to switch to semi-perms instead. Based on what I’ve been reading on this site, I want to go with Adore because of its durability and high pigment content. I was hoping someone could help me select a red. I know that semis won’t lighten my hair, and a red will show up as a tint, which is what I want. I’d like my hair to stay its current darkness level and be tinted dark red (pink-based, not purply). I’m thinking either Raging Red or Intense Red might be my best bets, but I’m having trouble telling the difference between them. Could someone help me out? As my hair is quite dark, I need the color to be powerful enough to show up and last.

Also, has anyone noticed a difference in the durability of those two colors or the color they fade to? I’m hoping I can go about a month without touch-ups. Do those of you who use Adore typically leave the dye for the recommended amount or longer? Thanks in advance!

I've used Intense Red, and it's a very dark pink-based burgundy colour.  However, I have found from my own use of Adore that it doesn't stick at all on unprocessed hair, only on hair already processed with peroxide, so it might not be a very good option for you.  Having said that, the staying power and durability on processed hair is excellent.  If you're willing to do a very small amount of processing, you could do a very weak bleach bath on your hair (not enough to noticeably change your shade, just enough to lift the cuticle so that the Adore will stick), then use the Adore.  I haven't used the other red, so can't offer an opinion on that.

I have to agree that Adore did not stick well on my roots at all--SFX reds tint my roots, but Adore didn't touch them.

I always mix my red shades, so I can't really comment on staying power/fade of different shades of Adore.  We do have an Adore Bases thread that you may find useful, though.

I was assuming that Adore would be equally durable on non-processed hair, so this is really helpful to know! I'm really trying to avoid peroxide, so I'm hoping you guys can help me find a viable option.

Could others chime in and weigh in with your Adore experiences on unprocessed hair?

It sounds like SFX might be a better option for me in that case. Perhaps Blood Red?

Are there other dye brands also known to stick well to unprocessed hair?

No the Adore-dyes I've used didn't even leave a sheen to my virgin hair.

I've used Raging Red, and even though it is one of my favourites, it's probably way too pink for you. 🙂 It's practically magenta.
