hey. i used the directions silver dye i did it on one extension strip and i had to use the hole tub to get a result.. which did come out really nicely. it was really hard to get silver hair i tried using b blonde bleach which turns the hair yellow but if left on for longer than adviced and with using the recommended measurements it does go a light whiter blonde colour.. and i used lee strafford, jon freeda, and a few others silver/blue/purple shampoos and was pleased with the results with just the bleach and the shampoo for a while.
but im trying to get white white hair. which is also really hard ive used the white toner which didnt come out like the girls photos which was quite upsetting having tried and spent lots of money on trying to achieve the perfect white/silver colour..

sorry to go on lol.. but maybe if you use a lot of the dye then it will give you good results if you was only using a pot or two.. also i went to a carribeanen shop and asked if leaving the dye on for longer than adviced would make a differents and they said that the product will only dye your hair for as long as its said on the pot she said that any longer is a waste of your time... which im not to sure about as when i used the dye i left it on for about 45 and the silver came out really nicely.
and with going white i heard that the hair needs to be bleached with no roots and the lighter the hair the bester. also the cleaner the har the better the results also as the hair is as clean as it can be..
please let me know how you got on as im trying to get my hair as light as it will go and any advice and experiments youve done with the results would help me massively and alot of other girls too πŸ™‚ so keep us posted please hun xxx

sarahhx-

yea, the first step you need to do obviously is to lighten with bleach.  Just be careful with it.  When you use it in a way other than directed, it can seriously f* up your hair to the point where it will fall out and break.  There are different 'volumes' (strengths) of bleach, so it's good to pay attention to that as well.  A lot of times drugstore bleach kits won't list the volume so it's usually better to pick up the powder/developer combo from a beauty supply store.
My advice is to look in the 'bleaching and lightening' section on this forum for really good tips on how to lighten your hair with minimal damage.

The silver shampoos do work alright but they won't take it all the way; they just kind of neutralize yellow tones in your hair.
I have also spent a lot of time and money on this; so I'll continue to update with results but keep in mind-this color is quite touchy and everyone's hair may come out different depending on the conditions.

In regards to the information you were given about leaving dyes in for longer than advised.....it depends on the type of dye.
For instance; an ammonia-containing or other 'chemical' semi-permanent will process for a given amount of time and then stop.  So yes, in this case it's fruitless to leave it in for a long time (and may also damage your hair).  However, vegetable-based dyes like most of the ones used by people on this forum (Stargazer, Directions, Manic Panic) don't depend on the chemical developer; they merely deposit a stain into the hair.  Because of this, it's safe and also sometimes more effective to leave these in for extended periods of time.
I have tried using the silver Directions in larger quantities and for a length of two hours max, still with no result.  But this is specific to my hair's conditions.  It may work differently for someone else.

Yes your hair should be clean and light for white.  I really suggest you PM Gothicle on this forum to ask her about white hair as it seems she's gotten the most dynamic and healthy results.  From the descriptions I've read, she lightens the hair gradually over a long period of time; I mean quite long, around a year if I remember correctly.
Please don't over-bleach in a short space of time, your hair will literally break off.

Good luck, and I urge you to take some time researching how lighteners and dye work before jumping into this!  Especially with such a particular result in mind, it should work out better for you and prevent many undesirable scenarios.

heyaa. yeah ive been dying bleaching my hair for years on end. so i know what to use for damaging etc. :):). yeah i use the powdered bleach from a drugstore and then i mix it with a 40 vol as ive done for years on end now lol. so im know im safe with that one tehe,,
yeah its just tryna find the right now which will work like yourself youve spend time and money on tryna get the best results its just spending the word to help so others dont do the same. when youve got the information to help everyone if you can..
yeaah when the woman in the shop said only put it on for the time said on the pot i was a bit like oh whatever aha! coz when  used the silver and only on for the 20mins/30mins said it didnt take at all but putting it on for an hour or so it worked well. so i dont really get what she was saying ha! but just go by what youve done before is obv best as you know your own hair :):).

hopefully im gonna dye my hair tuesday do my roots with a good bleach for about 40-50 mins. and then toner for about an hour and see what happens πŸ™‚ if it dont work out. im gonna leave my hair for a while as obv keep dying bleaching messing with your hair is bad.
have you done yours yet or you still looking at products etc?

Ok; I finally used the Wella 'Light Drabber' all over.

I'm very happy with the results, although it's certainly a blue grey rather than a neutral.  It started out strong violet, quite a deep hue.  After five washes it's lightened to a nice silver.
^_^

pre-color (lightened 2x from natural medium blonde)

Light Drabber (after 3 washes)

Yay for white hair success! So many people want white hair and I think it looks fantastic on some people but it's so difficult to acheive and maintain it. Well done!

Well thank you!  I'm very pleased with it too.

Admittedly it has a strong silver tint; white would be fantastic but perhaps my swatch made it look lighter than it really is.

I think what I like most about this dye is that it doesn't just go on totally silver, and then you get maybe 3 days of good hair before feeling like it's time to top up.  The first few days are 'oh, I have cool blue hair.....' and then it progressively gets better~  ^_^v

The only thing I'm hesitant about is that the Wella seemed to do a fair amount of damage......I'm aware of the reconstructing treatments, but I'd like to be able to dye frequently without the fear of cooking it.  Anyone else have experience with Wella?  Is that normal or perhaps I let it process too long (45 min, max recommended time)?
