Hello, it will be my first post here and there seems to be a lot of experienced.....experimenters ^_^ posting, so I thought perhaps someone could help.
My goal: silver hair. Not lilac, not blue......X_x
It has been silver before; I went to South Korea in the spring and had it bleached, then they put an amazing dye on it that turned it a nice pewter. Since then I haven't been able to find anything even close to equivalent. My hair has been lightened even further since then, and seems to be (as I've read most of the white/silver related posts on here) the 'color of the inside of a banana.' I would assume this is light enough.
So, I've tried LaRiche Directions Silver, left it on for 45 minutes with absolutely zero result; not even a toning effect. This was done on clean, towel-dried hair. I thought perhaps the wet hair wasn't taking it, so I did a strand test on dry hair and left it on for an hour. Still absolutely nothing. Could this possibly be a bad batch? Has anyone had problems with Directions? It seems to be a very highly rated brand, which is why I went for it.
I've also tried Wella's 'Silver Lady' Color Charm toner with little to no effect, and patch-tested Wella's 'Light Drabber' semi-permanent. The 'Light Drabber' appeared pewter on the sample swatch I looked at, but after five minutes in my hair, it turned it lilac purple so I promptly washed it out.
I understand that silver is hard to achieve, but I've been under the impression that my hair is more than light enough. Sorry for the extensive post, but I thought it would be good to describe everything I've done to get the best response. Any help would be appreciated....thank you very much.

Ive had trouble with directions, I bleached my hair put blue on it and it turned my air back brown, I wont use directions again
thats weird
I know I did it myself and then I went to my hairdresser and it did the same thing I was gutted :-[
Ah that sucks
Maybe your hair has to be white before going silver? So that all the colours are gone out of the hair, then you add one in.
I've never had trouble with directions, it's my go-to brand!
I love Directions its never failed me before.
If you look on ebay and things you can sometimes get unusual brands of dye from sellers in Korea etc, maybe have a look there?
im also a directions girl. silver is my next colour, so ths makes me sad. like kitty said, maybe try getting your hair to white, then put on clean, dry unconditioned hair, leave for a few hours (beacuse it's veggie it won't damage your hair) and see how that turns out. sorry it hasn't worked for you hun
Thanks all for the advice. Perhaps I will look on ebay for another brand from Korea, or Japan....I've heard there's a good Japanese toner for it too, but I'm not sure of the name.
Really hoping I wouldn't have to go lighter, my hair is already a touch fried. Probably will just wait until all of the dead ends grow out, get it cut and try again....I found all the great tutorials here on lightening and bleach baths, so I'll keep that in mind too.
Pippachainsaw- if you have any luck or experience weird results trying to do silver, could you let me know? Hope it goes better for you~
yeah no worries, same for you, any hints or tips. try using joico for fixing fried hair
Looks like I might have solved the problem......perhaps.......
after a couple of washes, that Wella Color Charm 'Light Drabber' (that I thought had totally f*d up) looked very nice and silvery on the part I had patch-tested. I decided to give it another go on a strand, letting it develop for the full amount of time. It looks great; gunmetal grey! Haven't done my entire head yet but shall soon.
*edit* thanks for the tip on Joico; I've heard their products are good.
Sometimes when the hair is a bit fried it won't take colour because the cuticles are open in the hair. Once the hair has been conditioned and the cuticles can close the hair holds colour much better.
I'm glad you're all sorted now.
Ah- about the too-damaged hair; I've heard that before, and considered it might be part of the problem. Thank you for bringing it to my attention! I really do need to repair it a bit. I'll report back when I've tried the 'Light Drabber' all over so that hopefully anyone else wanting to do silver will have something more to go on. Just waiting for boyfriend to get back in town....-_- wanting to do it right before I see him and all~
im glad it's looking good. keep us posted =) also i'd be eternally grateful for pictures
Sure; if I post pictures I'll try to show some before and after shots. There are a lot of great photos on here of end results but not much of the pre-color stage- that should help anyone else wanting to go this shade, as you'll see the degree of lightening first.
Also, just noticing this from experience over the last few weeks but swimmer's shampoo seems to work much better at keeping my blonde hair extremely light than a violet shampoo or toner. It also takes out the yellow (caused by mineral and chemical buildup in tap water)....those striving for even just a platinum might want to try this. I'm sure it would be a double effect to use the violet-based products afterward~
