Hair going blue?

Hi everyone,

I recently dyed my hair green using Directions Alpine Green and a few teaspoons of Midnight Blue. For a start the result was great; until I washed it. The more I wash it, the more my hair turns bright blue. Even on days I don't wash it, I seem to notice more and more strands of blue just 'randomly' popping up, even my fringe gets more blue by the day! Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I work indoors all day so I don't go out into the sunshine that much and I don't really use any products on my hair except for shampoo (for coloured hair) and normal conditioner.

Unfortunately, the green did take on my massive roots (before picture included, with ginger roots and minty green hair) and now the top of my head is green, while the rest is blue. And this keeps getting worse and more noticeable every time I wash it. So I'm thinking about dyeing it again, but just using blue this time to even it out. Or to just dye the roots blue, maybe diluted with conditioner. Would this work?

I've added some pictures so you can see what I'm talking about, but the colour is insanely hard to capture! Sometimes it turns out light blue and other times dark green.. It's kind of a bright teal-y/dark green-y colour at the moment :p

I'm not sure why the colour is fading even on days you don't wash it, have you been using heat on it (hairdryer? Straighteners?) or do you sit under the heating vent at work or anything?

The green roots are being caused by the yellow tone of your base colour in that area of your hair, you could try just using the blue this time but it might always have a slightly green tint as the dyes are translucent and your base colour always needs to be taken into account.

I think you could get a wicked gradient going by putting a darker blue (like pure Midnight Blue) on the ends!

@Lauralei: I don't use straighteners and I only use a hairdryer on my fringe. I'm not near any other heat sources so I really have no clue what's causing this either. Thanks for the advice, I think I'll be trying to even it out with more blue dye sometime soon. Do you think diluted blue would take? Or maybe a mix of alpine green and midnight blue (but with more blue this time)? Because Midnight Blue by itself is quite dark so I think that'd be too much.

@TabithaBlue: That would be pretty cool πŸ˜› But just trying to stick to one colour for now, I want to even out my hair haha

do you sweat a lot at night? It could be that just natural sweating could be causing the fade. Or even just old damge that means anything like playing with your hair, wind can also fade hair. I find my ends fade much more quickly than the rest of my hair simply because they are older and more damaged due to wind, styling (mechanical as i dont use heat much), etc. I also have some areas around my forehead and nape that fade quicker as i sweat a lot at the gym and wipe those areas more than the rest.

I think the dilute blue might be a better option than the alpine green mix as although alpine is a bluish green it still could pull towards green because of the yellow in your hair. It's really hard to say though, it may be a case of you doing some strand tests!
