Hi There,
My wife and I run our own small hair salon. I handle the business and she is an extremely good hair colorist. We built our own small home salon and it is very well ventilated with a full HRV (usually used to ventilate and entire house) for the 500 sq. ft. salon.
Life is good, but I am very concerned about her health and working around these chemicals. I have tried suggesting alternative colors brands (davines for example) that do not have the chemicals, but she is reluctant to switch.
Can anyone offer any advice? or share a personal experience? Has anyone done color work their whole life and experienced a medical problem as a result?
I am caring husband and have no clue when it comes to actually doing anything with hair. Any help is appreciated.
Doug.
I can't give any real scientific evidence, only anecdotal. I've known lots of hairdressers over the years, many who have worked in the business all their lives. I knew 3 who were in their 50s/60s back in the late 80s and early 90s, 2 females and one male. They were as healthy as the next middle aged person and the chemicals were a lot harsher back then. I'm also pretty sure back then (in the UK) there wasn't many, if any, rules on ventilation. Salons were very steamy back then!
As long as there's good ventilation, which it sounds like you have covered, I'm sure she'll be fine π
Thank you for sharing. There are no rules here (in Ontario, Canada) either with respect to ventilation. This was one of the reasons we wanted to build our own salon. Often here, the salon owners call a small bathroom vent, ventilation. Hardly. This stuff smells and even the HRV doesn't get rid of the smell immediately. She uses L'oreal. I'm hoping this does not differ greatly in terms of the chemicals in the product that you folks use.
Does anyone else have anything?
My moms been a cosmetologist for about 20 years, she's 47 and she has never had any medical issues from the chemicals, and she has used loreal, redken, wella, and all kinds of professional grade products. the worse thing she has ever had would be the occasional headache when she does a perm, but other than that, she's all good. We are in the US, btw
Thank you!
