I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in pre-lightening so apologies if I plumped for the wrong one!
I've been using bleach baths on my hair as a pre-lightener for the past few years as I've been using various super-bright reds but recently I've been going for more auburn shades and I've loved the colour my hair goes when I first apply a dark auburn colour but I'm finding it's fading quickly to a sort of coppery strawberry blonde very quickly and I was wondering if I should change my approach!
I tried just pre-softening my roots but the Adore dyes I've been using don't stick to my hair at all with that, and I tried not leaving my bleach bath on too long but my hair is a very ashy dark blonde naturally and it doesn't even go through a ginger or yellow stage, it's white by the time I finish applying the bleach (using the weakest peroxide I could find!).
Does anybody here use a box dye on their roots only to help a semi stick? Would that be a way to prep my hair whilst keeping the base from being too light? I don't want to repeatedly use a box dye all over as my hair must be damaged from the bleach, but would it work to just do it all over just the once then keep doing the roots?
If your hair already goes to white with a weak bleach bath you won't want to use a box dye. Have you tried the Adore Plus line? It's meant to cover greys so it might stick to your roots better. Otherwise maybe someone can suggest a brand of oxidative dye that can be used with 10 volume developer perhaps. Or maybe using a a stronger volume developer and/ or more time when presoftening.
10 vol would do diddly-squat to my roots for pre-softening, I need at least 30 vol.
Thanks for your answers ladies π the problem with Adore Plus and suchlike is that my hair is very slippery and shiny so nothing sticks to it in its virgin state even for more than one wash, but then it takes up bleach like you wouldn't believe and goes white really fast! I think I'll have to just use Adore on a weekly basis (it's literally lasting 2 washes on me at the mo before going like a powdery ginger with white roots) until my roots grow out a bit (god knows why I bleached them again - I had months of regrowth! ) and then perhaps try a stronger peroxide for pre-softening. I'm trying a mix of darker adore shades too to see if i can get a bit of depth to it.
Someone I know who has a similar natural colour to me says she bleach bathes with conditioner diluting a bleach mix until it's really weak but I've never tried it.
If I were to try a box dye at some point in the future can I ever put it over the previously bleached bits of my hair or are they too processed now? They're like Eminem blonde, like neon yellowy white!

Again, I really wouldn't recommend a box dye. They use like 30 volume for the blonde shades which is way too much for hair that lightens as easily as yours and you absolutely wouldn't want to put it on previously processed (especially white) hair.
Yeah I gave it some more thought afterwards and realised I'm not thinking very clearly with the box dye idea and I get what you mean about it being too strong for my hair. I wasn't thinking of using a blonde one, I was thinking of when my roots next need doing using a brown or auburn permanent and then topping that up with Adore but do the brown dyes use as strong a developer? I have used red box dyes before and they didn't seem to do a huge amount of harm, but they were Live XXL so I wonder if the silicones were just masking the damage?
I think the reason bleach takes so quickly on my hair is just that my hair is so ashy that there is no natural red to show up (it literally can look green under certain lights!)so it doesn't cycle through the orange/ yellow colours it just goes dark blonde - light ash blonde straight away. but I'm guessing this still means it is as processed as someone who has lightened dark hair through the orange and yellow stages?
For now I'm trying a darker shade of Adore and I'm gonna try conditioner only washing most of the time to see if I can extend the colour and I have a month or so to decide what to do with my roots. (any further advice or suggestions welcome!)
