Going from direct dyes back to normal - what to do?

So, I currently have fuschia/pink hair, and aim to go back to red as I want to start using conventional oxidative dye again. I am aware that the hair under the direct dye has been bleached, so I'm worried about whether it will take oxidative colour or whether I will need to fill it somehow?

Right now, I plan to fade it and then tone it back to red using direct dye, over a period of about six months or so. My natural colour is about a level 7 dishwater blonde, so the roots  don't look as good as they do on naturally dark hair. Shouldve the roots alone to grow out, and try and match the colour to the direct dyed ends? Or will the colour on the bleached part allow the dye to grab? I can't get this professionally done, so advice on the best way to proceed would be great!

The bleached parts will likely grab the dye and be a lot brighter and then fade more quickly. But permanent dyes in red fade faster anyway and having to re-dye over the faded parts, especially bleached parts, will cause a lot of damage to build up. You’d actually be best off carrying on using the direct dyes to add the bulk of the colour (Adore has great reds, natural and unnatural) then just using permanent dyes to do ONLY the roots. Then you can top up the colour at any time you want using the direct dyes with no additional damage.
