getting adore blue black to come out dark, help

Hello,
So before using adore blue black my hair was a silvery/gray. I used adore blue black on the top 1/3 of my hair and I wanted it to be blue black on top and fade into silver. I think I did something wrong with washing it out. It looked fine on, but after I washed, it wasn't blue black anymore, it's more like a dark blue. I tried to wash it without letting it run onto the ends of my hair, but it ended up staining the silver parts of my hair and has made it into a steely gray. What I have now is dark blue fading into dark steely gray, and what I want is blue black fading into light silver. I left it on for an hour, and my hair was lightly conditioned with non-silicone conditioner. I washed it out in slightly warm water and the dye kept running and running. I didn't rinse until the water an clear because I felt like all the color was just washing out.  Do I just need to re-do it because I was going from such a light color to essentially black, or did I do something wrong? Also how can I keep the ends light? I expected some color run-off to darken the lengths of my hair but not this much. I don't have a lot of experience with dark semis, any tips much appreciated.
*thx*

The only thing you did wrong was conditioning prior to application. Shampoo with a sulphate shampoo, rinse with hot water and blow dry. Then apply the dye, this will give you the best dye uptake. Put conditioner on your ends and cover with foil or cling film so the run off doesn't stain them when you rinse.

Sorry I tried, but failed to combine these two posts.

I'm still not having luck with getting it the shade I'm after. I fixed the darkness problem, but it's a little too blue. So I'm guessing the best way is to add a little of straight black to the mixture to get the dark blue black that I'm after. It looks black in some lighting, but outside or in good lighting it is definitely a dark blue and doesn't look black at all. What black semi would you recommend I mix with adore blue black, and am I still doing something wrong, or is adore's blue black just more on the blue side?
I would like to avoid staining as much as possible, so a non-stainy black (if that even exists) would be good. I would only be adding a small amount of it I'm guessing, so I don't think the stain is too big of a concern but I did want to mention it.
*thx*

There's really no such thing as a true black dye. You'll have brown/red based, green based or blue based.  You'll need a black with a brown base to neutralise the blue. I never use black, so I'm a bit out of the loop on which blacks have which base.

I mix it with a couple of drops of adore Jet black to get the color more on the black side.
