Hello guys!
I have been dying my hair for about eight years now. The last two years I have been dying it light red/ginger color and experimenting with different brands of hair dye - my most recently used one being professional hair dye Wella Koleston (shade is 88/43). I love love this shade and I thought I would never want to change it.
BUT... recently I became OBSESSED with purple hair!
Now that I spent about a month on Pinterest boards (and also here lol) looking at pictures of ladies with gorgeous purple hair, I have decided for sure I want to put that color on my hair too!
However I have a few concerns and questions and would really appreciate your tips you guys!
1. Do I have to bleach my hair? I am obsessed with this color but I am also obsessed with having long hair. I have been growing it for a long time and now it is almost as long as I have always wanted it to be. The red is not very forgiving so it's already pretty damaged and I don't wanna risk having to chop off a lot of hair.
2. What kind of color will I get if I put a purple dye over my ginger base? Obviously it will depend on the hair dye I use but I would like to know the possible outcomes. Like, any chance it will turn a weird shade of brown (or green - like Anne of Green Gables)? Do I have a chance to get to a pretty, vibrant purple? Or only dark-almost-black-purple will show up on my unbleached base?
3. Can I go back to my red har? I know these dyes are semi-permament which supposedly means that I will not carry my purple hair to the grave. But what when I decide I want to get rid of it? Will it fade leaving me with the red color I had as a base? Or will it fade leaving me with some questionable color that requires me to pay tons of cash to a colorist so I look human again?
Purples I really like:
Any advice, comments and suggestions will be very much appreciated!
PS Sorry for the long post, I am just very new at unnatural colors and most of the things I read deal with virgin hair
All the purples you have posted will require a much lighter base than you have. If you want a vibrant blue toned purple (bottom pic) or anything remotely pastel (second pic) you will need to bleach to a light blonde shade first.
If you put purple dye over your current colour you could achieve dark, plummy, aubergine shades of purple. The lighter your base, the more vibrant the purple you can achieve.
If your current colour is dyed, try a colour remover first. this will leave you with a lighter shade of ginger with no further damage. You can then bleach bath it if you want to go lighter. A low vol bleach bath over coconut oil is the least damaging way to lighten hair.
Once your hair is bleached, if you want to go back to auburn you can fade the purple and put a non-damaging auburn dye over it. There is no need to use damaging peroxide based dyes on hair that is already light.
Thanks a lot! :-*
Yeah, I was thinking of doing a color remover once or twice to lighten the hair a little. Since my hair color will still be warm, should I get a cool, blue-based purple to get to a true purple color? I'm kinda thinking purple purple may turn pink on an orange base....but on the other hand if it doesn't work I don't want bluish hair.
I also added another photo of my hair because I realized the previous one is showing it to be a bit darker than it really is.
IME it is easier to get a pinker shade of purple if your base isn't perfect. Something like Pimpin Purple or Violet Gem is a lot easier to achieve over an orangey base. Violet tones need a really pale blonde base to avoid looking and fading muddy.
An orange base makes purples more earthy and darker, more of a burgundy, not more pink. Blue toned purples on very orange hair come out almost black.
