Right before Thanksgiving I decided to dye my hair purple. I went to my local salon, which is known for dying hair all sorts of colors. I explained I wanted to try to go purple but without bleaching it, and my hairdresser swore it was possible, it would just be faint. She said a purple balayage would look best, so the color would grow out over time and avoid visible roots. Well the color was impossible to see, even in sunshine, but after about a month the purple-that-wasn't faded away to a light brown I didn't like. (Photo 1)
On New Years this year my friend came over and applied a box of Splatt Lusty Lavender all over my head without bleaching. The purple was exactly what I'd wanted in the first place, a vivid visible purple (Photo 2)
In the last month or so I've washed with cold water, avoided heat, and only used a low-poo mild sulfate shampoo 4-5x, co-washing the rest of the time. Regardless, it's faded to a yellowish pink (photo 3).
I'd *really* like to get back to my natural brown but what is the best way to do that? I'm hesitant to go back to my initial salon since I was so disappointed last time. (After the initial dye she offered to bleach it and put on more purple, but I really had wanted to avoid bleach, and when I complained about how it faded she said even without bleach it always fades to a lighter color, which I hadn't been aware of). But I'm also worried about trying a box. No matter what I pick, is it going to just wash out and fade away yet again?
Yes. It's always going to fade. They aren't permanent dyes, but even permanent dyes fade most of the time. All you need to do though is use the dye again. They're non damaging so you can do it as much as you like.
Yeah any permanent dye would lift your colour slightly so mostly when the tint fades you are left with a gingery light brown, and all dyes fade after time! Now your hair has been slightly pre-lightened by what your hairdresser did you can just keep using the purple that your friend applied if you want to but you need to reapply it every month or so (that rate it fades at depends according to different people's hair!).
If you want to go back to your natural colour you can use something like Adore which is a direct dye that you can use frequently to keep it nice and dark. Alternatively you could ask your hairdresser to take it back to a dark brown for you, but I find even permanent dark browns fade after a while and they are more damaging than the direct dyes.
