ew! stained nails!

i did a quick search on here, but didn't see this addressed... sorry in advance if i missed it!

i wore gloves when applying the dyes and while rinsing them out, but not when drying my hair.  i usually air dry, but it was well past bedtime and i didn't want to wake up looking like a blueberry from sleeping with wet hair!  i tried not to touch my damp hair with my hands-- i used a microfiber towel, mostly-- but i had to do *some* finger-combing to detangle.  so, i was left with nice, dry hair and a bright blue tinge to my palms and fingertips.

i washed with liquid soap, and everything that was on my skin came off fairly easily, but the color that stuck to my bare nails isn't budging.  and since it's blue, it makes me look like a corpse!  what's funny is, i've been dying my hair for YEARS, and i've had this happen before... but i've always had a nail varnish on my nails FIRST, so my natural nails have always been protected.  oops!!

any suggestions that won't kill my nails?  i'm contemplating just putting a nail varnish *over* the staining to hide it, but i know that whichever color will just start to stain blue, too, the next time i wash my hair!

Happens all the time to me πŸ™‚ I just end up painting them! It wears off pretty quickly.

I permanently have pink nails! Lol! In fact I barely notice it now. I tend to only remember gloves after a dye before 1st wash for things like brushing, straightening etc. Plus I seem to sleep with my hands in my hair!

If it's an occasion I'll tend to paint them to cover it up. You've inspired me with clear varnish after next time I do my hair though!

i always used to paint my nails white before i dyed my hair, so that they'd go a matching color when i washed.  it's a nice effect.  but... i'm not enjoying the look of blue over my bare nails, it makes me look ill.

Try nail polish remover. The ones with acetone are better. Its how i get it off my nails.

... I once had greyish stained nails from black hairdye, eww!
Nail polish remover helped a little, but it was so stained I could see it growing out for weeks.
Sonia, do you want the clear varnish to be coloured or to protect your nails from colour? Because when I had clear varnish on it would also become coloured...

Lily I was thinking clear varnish to protect, so I could remove it easily.

I'd say wear nail varnish when you need to cover them up, but try to keep them varnish-free as much as you can, say at weekends, as I'm sure the staining should fade with enough water running over them - showers and hand-washing, etc.

It wasn't hair dye, but about four years ago, I painted my natural nails straight with this neon-yellow/green nail varnish.  When it came to take it off, it stained terribly.  I didn't even give it a chance to wear off and ended up buffing down my nails till they were so thin, they were effectively gone.  That's when I started acrylics again - which of course destroys the natural nails terribly!

So all because I wasn't patient in letting showers and "water and time" clean up my stained nails (my fault!), I started probably a good year-cycle in trying to get my natural nails back!

The only thing that gets it off my nails is nail polish remover.  Usually a couple of quick swipes with a cotton pad soaked in the stuff does the trick.
