Dying after using Colour B4

Hi guys

My natural hair is dark brown at the roots and brown with auburn (and grey lol) naturally in it.  My hair seems to be very porous as i dyed it dark brown to cover my ends as they had gone very gingery in the sun and my hair went virtually black.

I used Colour B4 which of course made my hair ginger.  I then used a semi-permanent medium ash brown and am now back to square one - with virtually black hair again  :'( -r-

If I was to use Colour B4 again, should I be choosing a lighter shade of semi-permanent dye? And should I leave it on for the recommended amount of time?

Many thanks for your help  *loveeyes*

How long after the colour b4 did you use dye again?

That could be why it went so dark again. What happens is, the colour b4 shrinks the colour molecules and you then wash them out. Unfortunately, most of the time there's still a lot left in and when you dye your hair again these colour molecules are "re-oxidated" and so grow back making your hair dark again.

When you use the colour remover, you need to rinse for as long as you can (much longer than recommended) and with water as hot as you can stand to open the cuticles on the hair which allows the dye to come out more easily. Then you need to allow at least a week and a few more hair washes to really make sure as much is out as possible.

If you really have to dye it again straight away, then just tone the orange tones with a small amount of a blue dye (something like La Riche Directions) in cheap white conditioner. This will tone out the orange and make it more ash. It might not be what you want, but if it's ash you want it'll be easier to live with. The reason this won't make it dark again is it's not an oxidative dye, it doesn't have peroxide in it. The peroxide is the thing causing the problem.

Ah right.  I definitely didn't rinse for long enough then. Would ideally like to get back to my natural colour or as near as possible.  Every time I do my own hair it ends in disaster, you would think I would learn my lesson!

I am in the UK so will have a look in Boots/Superdrug over here to see but I can get to tone down the ginger.

Thanks very much for your help  *loveeyes*

I recommend Adore too, the wash in wash out Castings (the 8 wash one) used to be good but I tried the new formula last week and it's rubbish now!
