No, never, apply colour without the developer. It might cause some damage and it won't stick. You need the developer to open the cuticle and allow the colour molecules to slip under.

The best way of using a permanent black dye is to use a low volume peroxide and then ONLY redye the roots. If the black fades, then use a direct dye like these http://www.beeunique.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=137_139 to top up the colour. That's the best way of avoiding too much damage.

Another way would be to presoften the hair using a low volume peroxide and then using the direct dyes I linked you to before. It'll be about the same amount of damage though. They also don't work well on virgin hair, so you do need to do the presoftening at least once.

Hey Janineb!
Thanks for the help

If it fades , why not just redye again with the same color? I used to do it when i dyed jet black one year ago..
How much perixide to use? I think hair dye box contain 6%-9 peroxide .. Should i use another peroxide bottle?

You want to dye your hair without bleach, but you want to dye your hair over more than once with a dye that is damaging? I'm not really sure what you're asking for if it's not about damage prevention. Just because you used to do it, doesn't mean it's right.

If it's a box dye you're using, don't change the peroxide. 6-9% is ok. A bit stronger than you really need, but ok.

By the way, remember when you're making a new thread, don't just mention the colour of your natural hair. We need to know (for each thread, we don't all have good memories 😉 ) your natural colour, but also how much you have of that and then how much is dyed and how. I'd forgotten that your hair isn't all virgin and had to go back and check just now. It does have an effect on the advice I give. In this case, I'd say that the option of presoftening the roots and using a direct dye is the best option for you. Which you can buy online.

Yes, ammonia causes damage.

I don't really like box dyes at all, because you rarely know what strength of peroxide they use. I was surprised when you knew the strength of the other you mentioned, maybe that's a difference in regulations here and there. But ALL permanent box dyes are damaging and should NEVER be used over the same hair twice.

I bought loreal excellence, wella koleston and indola, in all of them there was a peroxide percent.. And i am sure its not more than 9% .. Maybe its even 6 ,i dont remember exactly. If i use semi permanent , can i dye several times? The semi also contain peroxide

Anything that has peroxide in shouldn't really be used over the same hair repeatedly. You shouldn't be using ANYTHING with peroxide over hair that is already damaged IF you want to avoid damage. It's not just using the same product twice.

Your hair has already been processed many times, is that correct? If so you can use a black direct dye such as Adore (or any of the brands sold here) totally non-damaging so you can top up as often as you like.
As Janine has said avoid anything with peroxide if you want to keep your hair. keep processing and it will snap off.
