Do dyes have a shelf life?

Having a clear out, and I came across a pot of Directions pillarbox red that must be 5 years old (i didn't realise I still had it!). It's still sealed though. Would it still be ok to use? Or do dyes go 'out of date'?

I recently strand-tested a 19 year old box of lagoon blue on a friend and it was fine. It had split up so I had to mix well first, but it worked πŸ˜€ (he wanted to try, btw xD)
So I'd say it's ok to use, worst that could happen would be that the colour is a little different from new dyes

As long as it wasn't exposed to heat or light it's probably fine. Dyes do have a shelf life but it seems to vary based on how the dye was stored and whether it was opened. I have some opened jars of colors that are now over a year and they are fine except for one which probably dried out as it got really thick and had the goopy consistency of boogers.

That's good to hear. I'm not relying on it, but it's a good shade to go into my next mix if the consistency is ok.

It's been in a drawer in a bedroom, so should be ok re light / heat exposure.

Wow 19 year old dye! I have used a lot of very old dyes but that definitely wins lol

The following section in our FAQ explains about these type of dye's shelf life - How Long Do The Dyes Last Unopened.  Although we cannot say people should use these dyes after this period has expired, we have heard from many many customers who have used dyes that are several years old with no adverse affects.  As others have said, the pigments of the dye can separate over time so always stir/mix them well before use and try a strand test to check the results are what you are looking for.
