Hi Guys!
I would be hugely appreciative for some tips here. I am looking to mix my own silver shampoo and choose an ideal plan/products for my silver journey.
Unfortunately my beautiful mid-back length brunette virgin hair was ruined by a stupid local hairdresser who was meant to give me "just a couple of inches of dip dye on the end" so I could have a play around with pastel colours but instead managed to give me an awful banded mess which ended up going about 7" up my hair. I had it corrected by a highly skilled colourist but she had to do a brunette root stretch going into my silver tips to get me the style I had originally wanted. It looks lovely though I'm upset that I ended up having to dye my whole head when all I initially wanted was a simple dip dye on the ends. Onwards and upwards though right?! *cheers* My new colourist took care not to allow the dye on the top to tarnish the silver tips but despite her best attempts I think a tiny bit got into the tips from the wash out of the dye on the top. The first hairdresser bleached my hair to straw and the tips were originally very white indeed. However, they had now darkened very slightly I suspect from a combination of the dye rinse out and the silver toner the hairdresser put on.
After my appointment I thought I'd strike while the iron was hot to get out any run off dye so very carefully rubbed just the very ends in Provoke touch of silver shampoo and left it on for 10 minutes. When I washed it off it had gone darker silver still and is now a very striking steel colour. In sunlight it literally looks metallic silver. Its COOL, I can't complain but I'd still like a better contrast on the tips. I would like to find a way to acheive:
1) A DIY silver shampoo! ๐ I have to take care to use SLS free gentle shampoos as to not make a dent in the brunette dye but keep any brassiness at bay both through the brunette tones and the silver. Thought the brunette dye it permanent I don't want it to fade and show the crappy bleach job underneath, I paid A LOT of money to get this done! I have a lovely, gentle organic shampoo and would like to add violet pigment to it. What product would you guys recommend? I have a medley of silvers/purples including Pravana Silver, Jerome Russel Silver, Crazy Colour Hot Purple and Manic Panic Ultra Violet. I want to get just the right tone to maintain the silver but also help it fade to a whiter silver over time. Which one(s) should I mix up and which ratio of colour to shampoo would you recommend?
2) The best method to encourage the silver tips to gradually lighten from steel into a more dramatic whiter silver. I'm scared to go for yet another round of bleach on my once super white tips but don't know if this tarnishing is just the result of using too dark toners/purple shampoos and will just fade with time or if, indeed, the brunette pigment has genuinely wormed its way in there on the wash out of my top part being dyed.
I can't thank you guys enough for any and all advice, this hair disaster ended up costing the best part of ยฃ1000 all in all considering it took my awesome new stylist several sessions to correct and I desperately want to keep myself from suffering anymore stress over what was meant to be a fun, simple little dip dye! ๐
Can you add a pic?
I would add some dye to your regular conditioner rather than shampoo, and leave it on for 15 minutes or so every time you wash.
However, to get your ends lighter you need to let the colour wash out and avoid adding any more pigment.
Washing with a sulphate based shampoo will speed the process up, I find Touch of Silver is excellent for fading direct dyes
Thank you so much Wicked Pixie!
Sure, here are some snaps. See, the funny thing is when the light hits it right (like in the indoor snaps) the contrast is very visible and dramatic. In outdoor lighting it looks muddier. As I turn it in the light it goes from EXTREME metallic silver to a slightly tinged tone. Greenish/brownish even? This is DEFINITELY a result of the permanent brown dye washing through it when it was rinsed out the top part (even though they tried so hard to avoid this) because before that it was an icy silver with no tinge ๐ Do you think there is any hope for me lightning at all with just washing alone considering it was rinse of from permanent dye that did this?
My main prerogative is to baby it now and try and heal its frazzley-ness so feel sulphate free shampoos are the way forward for the moment as it has suffered terribly from the bleach (the second salon Olaplexed and deep conditioned etc.) I do want to try and get the ombre more deliberate looking as right now, I dread, it looks like ACTUAL greys rather than a purpose funky dye job in that outdoor pic. I think its a trick of the light but still, NOT COOL! ๐ฎ Eeee! Scary stuff.
Which colour would you recommend adding to my conditioner to smash out those brassy tones or would I be better just toning with a white toner to kill the brass without applying any more dark colour to it? I guess I could use my silver conditioners (I have Fudge and Bleach London) as they are very very pale on the lilac.
