DIY root touch up (first time)

So my colorist dyed my roots a couple months ago (a 2 inch grow out). Didn't care for it as it was too brassy (yellow w/orange) so i've been maintaining it w/toner although it barely does the job (i have very tone resistant strawberry blonde hair).

Now my roots are starting to grow out and i have a color i'm going to do at home (roots only) a Koleston color so i know i'm getting quality. Anyway, i have someone advising me and she said to pull the color through the 2" part the colorist put in, the LAST FIVE minutes of processing (i process 55 minutes) but that is going to be HARD to do, to go over it all again and only those 2 inches (past the roots i've just done!!)

My Q: Why can't i do the 2" same time i'm touching up the roots? BTW i'm using 40v developer because of greys and going up 3 levels.  THANKS!!  *anyone*

Do NOT use 40vol developer on your scalp, it's too strong and will burn you.  30vol max for near the scalp.  Plus 40vol can lift 8 levels in one shot so if you only want to lift 3 levels you could use 20vol.

The reason you shouldn't process the 2" for the same time as your natural hair is that it's already been processed and doesn't need the extra lift and damage that a long process time will cause.  It might snap off.

Just seconding what Kitebunny said; 40 vol is not meant to be used on your scalp! Have you a lot of grey? I use Wella Koleston with 20 vol and it covers my greys (and a natural white stripe in my hair) fine.
