Hi everyone! This is going to be lengthy. I've been trying to dye my hair purple but it turned out dark brown with redish tint, even in direct sunlight. I'm going to be completely honest with what I did with my hair and the reasons behind them. I have black Asian thick hair at about shoulder length. About a month ago, I decided that I want my hair dark purple. I did not want to bleach my hair cause I was afraid of a vibrant purple. So the next *logical* thing to do was permanent dye it a brown and slap some purple on top. Well, I used L'Oreal Excellence Hi-Color Permanent Hair Color in Coolest Brown. I dyed it brown immediately, and then dyed it again with Purple Haze from Manic Panic the next day. After rinsing my hair and letting it air dry, I found no trace of purple. My hair just got darker, much darker. It looked close to my original black hair. A week later, my hair is brown again because I washed out the purple with hot water. I dyed it again with the remaining half jar of Purple Haze. It's dark brown again... I don't know why I expected a different result to be honest. I used Color Oops on my hair this Wednesday, and I can see purple going down the drain. I thought a lighter shade would show the purple. I'm left with lighter brown hair than the permanent dye which is to be expected. I then dyed it with Ion Brilliance Purple the next day. It's dark brown again. I should have listened to all the reviews about waiting to dye over. But I'm not sure if it would've help if I waited. I don't know what to do now. Would my hair fade to a purple? Should I do a bleach bath (would it lighten my hair and take out the color at the same time)? Should I straight bleach it? I would very much like a visible purple that's not vibrant. Thanks for reading! I'll appreciate any advice.
Dying your hair brown, especially a still pretty dark brown was definitely the mistake. Purple over brown makes black and it won't change sadly. π as a dark colour to a dark colour and nothing much will happen apart from it getting darker. For purple to show vibrantly, yes you will have to bleach it to at least a dark ginger. With a dark ginger you'll get a visible purple that isn't too vibrant.
So, if its been a month since you used the brown dye then I would say one full bleach with low volume peroxide to get you to a dark ginger and you'll be fine. If it's less than a month, wait until it has been a month.
Also, the bit about waiting to dye over hair that you have used color oops on, that's just for permanent dyes. For dyes like ion its fine. As you say, it wouldn't have made any difference as your hair will still have been too dark for purple to show.
