covering hair while dye is doing its job?

Hi!
I wanted to dye my hair a lavender color, so I went ahead and ordered "lilac" and "lavender" by directions. It was only after i'd made the order that my smart butt realised that both of those dyes don't work well on hair that is not white blonde. (mine is light but still kind of in the ashy/dirty blonde section, it is bleached and toned though).

Now I had the idea of covering my hair in a plastic bag (the crackling kind) while the dye is  sitting on it which will help keep my house from turning purple, but I was wondering if it might even give me a slightly better result? Obviously the dye doesn't work like bleach where the warmth of your body accelerates the chemical reaction if you keep it trapped in a bag, but in some other way? or do you think it would be a bad idea or make no difference at all?

thanks! πŸ™‚

p. s.  sorry if this is a completely stupid question, but i definitely lack experience in this field.  ::)

It can help a bit, but not much. Cover it and then add heat from a hairdryer can help more though. The heat lifts the cuticle which can help some dye slip under, it can mean a better colour and longevity. It's always worth covering it anyway, to prevent it drying out πŸ™‚

I've never used those dyes, not my favourite colours, but it is true that they're not hugely pigmented, so might not work all that well. Maybe get another deeper purple/blue to add a bit. You could try a strand test to see if it will work, if not, add a bit of the purple or blue.

oh okay thanks so much, i'm going to try that! Am actually sitting here with a plastic bag over my head right now.  ;D

And yes i'm definitely getting a more pigmented purple/violet next time, i think i bought some of the least cost effective ones haha!

Lavender barely shows if your hair isn't white, and on me undiluted lilac went blue after one wash. I prefer to make my own pastels with really dark dyes diluted heavily, the Lilac was an experiment to see if pre-made pastels covered better (they don't lol)

Yep, looks like i got myself blonde/grey hair with some dusty lilac/lavender highlights! it looks quite nice in some lightings but in others it's barely noticeable as expected with these dyes. And it'll probably be gone after washing my hair once. BUT this experiment has made me more confident that lavender tones actually look pretty good on me.  *1* (cheers with appropriately-colored pompoms)

Hey I used Lilac on mine, how long did you leave it on? Mine is a weird shade of grey in a lot of places but vibrant lilac at the front. Here's some photos, one is the base before I dyed then there's right after dying and then after one wash...
