Just as the the title says really, I have dyed my hair with Directions Lavender, Cerise and Plum....I'd like to know if it is possible to use coconut oil or a 5 minute conditioning treatment to deep condition my hair or will this fade out my lovely new colours???
Also, is there any particular type of shampoo I should use? I currently have The Body Shop Rain Forest Volume shampoo and conditioner with no silicones, or John Frieda Blonde Colour Renew Tone Correcting shampoo and conditioner....or should I get a specifically for colours shampoo?
TIA
Hot oil treatments do suck out some dye, as does washing (especially with shampoo regardless of sulfates). If your hair was just dyed in the last couple days I wouldn't do anything that will need rinsing out just yet. Coconut oil can be left in but tends to make hair look kind of gross and dirty if over applied. It washes out much better with conditioner, which is kinder to dyed hair, so it's not too bad if you have to wash it out. Use cool water to rinse and don't really scrub it in and lather and you probably won't see too much fade.
I can't advise on shampoos since I don't use it except sulfate free will be better for dyed hair than shampoo with sulfates.
The thicker the layer of dye, the less impact the conditioning product will have on your hair.
Same goes for fake tan or excessive amount of dead skin on the surface - the product won't be able to really penetrate deep into your hair.
What I'd advise doing is, when you have a couple days off, like a weekend, or holiday, when you don't go out and just can allow yourself to look not the best You've ever looked, rinse out a bit of the dye, apply coconut oil, joico k-pak's, sleep in them, keep them under a shower cap, really deep condition them for like 2-3 days straight, and THEN re-dye your hair.
It will do your hair more good then applying conditioning treatments for 5 minutes once a week.
Thankyou for your replies...my silicone free shampoo is also sulfate shampoo, so I will use that once in a while, co wash mainly and do some nice coconut oil treatments inbetween!
I've never had a problem conditioning my hair because of the dye on it. Anything that rinses through your hair, though, will pull colour out, and oil treatments seem to pull out quite a bit.
I've just finished a bottle of Body Shop Rainforest Shine Shampoo, and while it didn't affect my colour any more or less than other SLS-free shampoos I've used, it did make my hair feel dryer than other SLS-free shampoos I've used. I'd suggest switching to Osmo Colour Save, because that's the best one I've come across. I'm about to try Happy Hair Days, so I'll see how it compares.
